As autumn arrives, it’s the perfect season for reading and reflection. Across the 31 cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province, various public libraries stand as pillars of support for the daily lives and learning of residents. While local libraries are convenient, sometimes one craves the tranquility of nature and clear air for deep reading and contemplation away from the bustling city.

Located at the foot of Cheonggye Mountain in Seongnam, the Korean Studies Library is a treasure trove of knowledge that remains relatively unknown to the public. I had the opportunity to visit this modern cultural space, where fresh forest air mingles with the scent of academia.

The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) is a leading research institution dedicated to the in-depth study and promotion of Korean history, culture, and philosophy. Centrally located within the research complex, the Korean Studies Library systematically collects and preserves specialized books and scholarly materials related to Korean studies. Contrary to its seemingly exclusive image, it is an open space accessible to anyone interested in Korean history and culture.

Open to the public from Monday to Friday, the library welcomes visitors from 9 AM to 6 PM (closed on weekends and public holidays). Access is straightforward: present an ID at the reception, receive a visitor's pass, and you’re ready to explore. This quiet haven is perfect for those who wish to read or focus on personal projects.

Upon entering, the lobby features a striking wooden ceiling with a grid pattern, elegant chandeliers, and a large carpet adorned with traditional Korean motifs. A digital media wall and comfortable seating blend modern convenience with traditional aesthetics, creating an inviting atmosphere for reading or relaxation.

Let’s take a closer look at the charming features of the Korean Studies Library.

The 'Creative and Collaborative Space' located to the right of the lobby stands out as a vibrant hub for book recommendations, free learning, and communication. The 'Professor's Library' within this space has a lively orange wall filled with large bookshelves, complemented by a spacious wooden table and lounge sofas, making it ideal for comfortable reading or engaging discussions.

The neatly arranged marble tables and wall shelves display a collection of world literature and contemporary humanities books, encouraging visitors to explore Korean studies and humanities in an approachable manner. Cozy individual seating and study boxes equipped with outlets and lamps provide an excellent environment for focused work.

The library also features a high-tech 'Conference Room' designed for seminars and academic discussions, complete with a smart reservation display, a large projector screen, and comfortable seating.

The 'Exhibition Hall' showcases rare modern books and publishing artifacts, with themed displays that include early modern novels and textbooks. Notable works, such as the classic novel 'Samdae' published in 1949, are exhibited alongside covers and illustrations by renowned artists of the time.

As you venture deeper, the library’s core area unfolds, housing an extensive collection of historical texts and resources. A spacious reading table with individual stands allows for immersive research and study.

The 'Idea ON' space, designed for brainstorming and group studies, features a stylish blue-gray partition and wooden elements, creating an inviting seminar environment. The adjacent 'Smart ON' room is equipped for digital learning and personal study, promoting a shared culture of knowledge among visitors.

The Korean Studies Library, with its thoughtful design and user-centered approach, offers a unique experience that combines the depth of knowledge with the tranquility of nature. It stands as a cultural retreat open to all residents of Gyeonggi Province, inviting you to escape the city’s noise and enjoy a special reading experience in a serene setting.
