During my high school years, as I prepared for the college entrance exam, there was always one literary figure that stood out when discussing 'literature.' Most people have heard of this name: Garam Lee Byeong-gi.
Before researching the Iksan area, I didn't even know that Lee Byeong-gi was a literary figure and a scholar born in Iksan. While I vaguely remembered the poet's name and works, I was unaware that he was such a prominent figure from Jeonbuk. As a member of the press promoting the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, it was somewhat embarrassing not to know this. However, following the trajectory of his life has sparked a wave of curiosity within me. I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to visit the Garam Literary Museum and delve deeper into the life and works of Lee Byeong-gi.

A Place of Tranquility
Upon arriving at the Garam Literary Museum, the birthplace of Garam Lee Byeong-gi is located adjacent to the museum. On a particularly hot day, a staff member advised me to be cautious of snakes in the area, especially during the summer when they tend to appear more frequently. Despite the well-maintained path, it was surprising to be warned about snakes.
While exploring the birthplace, I recalled a past incident when I accidentally stepped on a large snake during a field investigation in the Buan area. The memory of that shocking moment came flooding back. Nevertheless, my curiosity about the life of the poet, who had been shrouded in mystery, encouraged me to take a closer look.
Sitting on the traditional porch where the poet spent his childhood and later honed his scholarly pursuits, I listened to the cool summer breeze and the chirping of birds. It became clear why he cherished the landscapes of daily life and the breath of nature so deeply.
Entering the Forest of Literature
As I stepped into the museum, I was reminded of other literary museums I had visited, such as the Arirang Literary Museum and the Taebaek Mountain Range Literary Museum. Comparing Garam's life to these other literary figures was personally enjoyable.
Not only did he appreciate alcohol, but he also had a fondness for orchids, as reflected in his writing, "The slender leaves seem firm yet soft." Observing the vibrant world of orchids made me understand why he cherished them so much.
The interior of the exhibition hall is designed to allow visitors to experience the poet's life and works seamlessly. A striking feature was the red headset booth hanging from the ceiling. Standing beneath it and listening to his poetry through the headset provided a unique immersive experience.
Garam Lee Byeong-gi's life and the significant impact of the 'Korean Language Society Incident' during the Japanese occupation are also highlighted, leading to his imprisonment at Hongwon Prison. The poem he wrote during this difficult time, titled "Hongwon Jeojang," reflects his unwavering spirit and hope.
Garam Lee Byeong-gi, who never smoked but enjoyed alcohol, was known for his warm interactions with his students. He often referred to himself as a 'Three Blessings Person,' enjoying the blessings of alcohol, students, and the symbol of integrity represented by orchids.
The museum showcases his life chronologically, detailing his birth in 1891, his fateful meeting with linguist Ju Si-gyeong, and his lifelong dedication to the study of the Korean language and literature. His noble life, which preserved our language amidst turbulent times, unfolds like a panorama.
