Today, we embark on a virtual journey to Sacho Village, a hidden local travel destination located in Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

While it may not be as well-known as Andong's Hahoe Village or Gyeongju's Yangdong Village, Sacho Village boasts a rich history as a traditional village that has preserved its culture for over 600 years.

Here, you will find the 'Sacho Garo Forest,' a green shield that protects the village, and 'Manchuidang,' the oldest private house associated with the Confucian scholar Toegye Lee Hwang.

Manchuidang is designated as Treasure No. 1825.

▪ Address: Manchuidang, 17 Manchuidang-gil, Jeomgok-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do

Built by Kim Sawon (1539–1601), a disciple of Toegye Lee Hwang, Manchuidang serves as a space for scholarly pursuits and welcoming guests.

Completed in 1582, before the Imjin War, it has maintained its original form for over 400 years, making it one of the oldest wooden private houses in Korea.

If you look up at the round pillars and the elegant 'Manchuidang' plaque, you will see the calligraphy penned by the renowned calligrapher Han Ho, a fellow student of Kim Sawon.

The name 'Manchui' (晩翠) is derived from a saying in the Analects, meaning "only in winter do we realize that pine and cedar trees bear their fruits late," reflecting Kim Sawon's aspiration to remain steadfast and true to his principles.

This sentiment resonates deeply, emphasizing a commitment to maintaining integrity, even if success comes slowly.

As you walk through the village, you will notice the natural stone foundation supporting round pillars and the exposed rafters of the ceiling, showcasing the unique charm of mid-Joseon architecture.

Sacho Village has evolved since its original construction, expanding in 1727 to develop its distinctive 'T' shaped layout.

It's fascinating to spot traces of the extensions made to the east and west.

Walking along the serene stone-walled paths, you will encounter the quaint 'Sacho Village Information Center' at the edge of the village and forest.

This center serves as a guide to the village's rich history and cultural heritage.

Inside, you can find beautiful exhibitions of village photographs from Jeomgok-myeon, so be sure to stop by.

The Sacho Garo Forest, designated as Natural Monument No. 405, was established by Kim Ja-cheom, the founder of the Andong Kim clan.

▪ Address: 1112-4 Iljikjeomgok-ro, Jeomgok-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do

This artificial forest was created based on the geomantic belief that if the western terrain is empty, the village will not produce talented individuals.

It has also effectively served as a windbreak against the cold northwest winds in winter.

Kim Ja-cheom predicted that as the forest flourished, great figures like Ryu Seong-ryong would emerge.

Indeed, his grandson, Ryu Seong-ryong, was born in this very village, highlighting the forest's remarkable energy.

As you pass the information center, you will find a lush 1 km forest path, where the towering zelkova and oak trees create a vibrant green wave.

Strolling through this path refreshes both body and mind.

Touching the rugged trunks of the trees that have stood guard over the village for centuries and resting on the dignified wooden floor of Manchuidang, you will feel a sense of clarity wash over you.

When the demands of the world leave you feeling weary, consider taking a moment to visit Sacho Village in Uiseong.

Remembering the spirit of the scholars flowing through the peaceful stone walls, you can cherish the calm journey in your heart.
