Exploring the Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library: A Hidden Gem in Jeonbuk

Located in Jeonbuk, the Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library is a newly opened library that has quickly become a hotspot since its opening on December 3rd. Intrigued by its modern design and serene atmosphere, I decided to visit.
The library, designed by architect Yoo Hyun-gil, draws inspiration from the UNESCO World Heritage site, Jongmyo Shrine. It aims to change perceptions of libraries and serve as a cultural hub for the community.
Upon arrival, the first thing that caught my eye was the long, sleek exterior and expansive glass windows. The modern yet tidy design made the library stand out from afar.
Though the parking space is limited to library visitors, there are nearby curbside parking options, making it relatively easy to access during weekdays.
Upon entering the library, I was immediately struck by the bright and airy atmosphere. The high ceilings and large windows allow natural light to fill the space, creating a welcoming environment for visitors to relax and read.
Unlike many libraries that can feel stifling, this one exudes a café-like comfort, instantly calming my mind before even opening a book.
Library Hours:
General Reading Room, Children’s Room: Weekdays (Tue-Fri) 09:00-22:00 / Weekends (Sat-Sun) 09:00-18:00
Closed: Every Monday and legal holidays
The library spans from the basement to the second floor, with well-organized spaces. The basement features community rooms and a multipurpose auditorium, ideal for reading groups, lectures, and cultural programs.
The first and second floors are dedicated to reading areas, with a wide selection of books categorized by various themes. The spacious aisles and cozy reading nooks create a natural flow for selecting and enjoying books.
One standout feature was the library's service robot, which helps visitors navigate the library. Even as an adult, I found it fascinating, and I can only imagine how intriguing it must be for children.
The children’s area is thoughtfully designed with shelves at kid-friendly heights, soft color schemes, and spaces for sitting on the floor to read. It encourages children to engage with books in a welcoming environment.
There were many families visiting, with children reading or spending quality time with their parents, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Additionally, the library includes an exhibit about scholar Hwang Yunseok, explaining the significance behind the library's name. This thoughtful integration of educational content emphasizes that libraries are not just for borrowing books but also for reflecting on knowledge and ideas.
Overall, the Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library is a place that feels more like a cozy café than a traditional library. It’s perfect for those who want to relax, read, or simply enjoy some quiet time. If you’re looking for a meaningful place to spend time with your family during winter break, I highly recommend visiting this library.
Whether you want to read, enjoy the space, or simply take a break, the Gochang Hwang Yunseok Library is a delightful destination for a leisurely day.
