During the cold winter months, people naturally seek warm indoor places to visit. Last weekend, I went to the Busan Fisheries Science Museum with my child. This place goes beyond simple exhibitions and stimulates children's curiosity while providing interesting sights for adults. It was easy to see why so many recommend it as a must-visit indoor location in Gijang.
Parking was ample, with a spacious dedicated lot, allowing for easy access even on weekends. The first exhibit I encountered showcased marine environments and seasonal fish species caught in our coastal waters, along with accessible information about fisheries and marine science.
I was also able to explore the history of fishing technology, featuring various fishing tools used by our ancestors, displayed with lifelike mannequins of fishermen. It was a great experience for visiting with children.
One memorable area was the Dokdo Hall, which presented various values and evidence of Dokdo as part of our territory, including domestic and international literature. There was also a model of Dokdo and real-time video footage available for viewing.
The museum has created spaces for children to easily understand seafood processing, lifestyle information, and nutritional data, making it a great place for family visits. A large screen displayed underwater scenes, and there were interactive areas to keep everyone engaged.
Additionally, there are hands-on exhibits for children to experience seafood processing and nutritional information firsthand. There is also a pathway leading to an outdoor viewing deck, where the open ocean view is truly refreshing.
Returning to the first floor, I found an area dedicated to marine life in Korea, where children could even observe plankton moving under a microscope! Adults can also participate, making it a fascinating experience.
The museum showcases a wide variety of stuffed fish, and seeing the diversity of marine life was astonishing. From freshwater fish to deep-sea species, we enjoyed a guessing game on their names and discussed which fish looked the coolest.
There is even a stuffed turtle once owned by former President Syngman Rhee, along with its intriguing backstory.
The final corner of the museum features an aquarium filled with various fish that seem to transport you straight into the ocean. The diversity and uniqueness of the species kept us entertained for quite a while.
There’s also a touch pool where visitors can feel the movements of the fish up close. Although it's a smaller aquarium, it offers a well-rounded experience that made our visit very enjoyable.
If you're looking for a warm place to spend time during the cold winter, the Busan Fisheries Science Museum is an excellent choice for a family visit, especially since admission is free!
