Exploring Sinjeong Market: A Culinary Paradise in Ulsan

Sinjeong Market is a traditional market representing Nam-gu, Ulsan, cherished for over 50 years for its warmth and abundant food offerings. It continues to be a beloved space today.
Starting from a few small stalls in the 1970s, it has now transformed into an arcade-style market, growing alongside the daily lives of Ulsan citizens.
The lively footsteps of elderly shoppers, the generous spirit of the merchants, and the enticing aroma of delicious food create a warm atmosphere. It is particularly famous for its kalguksu (handmade noodle soup), gukbap (rice soup), and various snack shops.
In 2024, Sinjeong Market was selected as a cultural tourism market by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, receiving financial support to enhance its offerings.
With a public parking lot conveniently located next to the market, some shops even provide parking vouchers for purchases over a certain amount. This makes visiting the market quite convenient.
On rainy days, you can access the market directly from the parking lot without going outside, although I recommend using public transport due to the busy roads nearby.
The market is spacious, with various entrances, so it’s best to plan your visit to specific areas for a more enjoyable shopping experience.
During my visit just before the Lunar New Year, I noticed a bustling crowd, especially on weekends when the parking lot is often full and people line up at popular eateries.
With an arcade installed for all seasons, you can visit without worrying about the weather. Inside, there are over 80 stalls and more than 250 shops, making it a delightful place to explore.
The market features sections for seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables, eggs, herbs, grains, seafood, and meat, all at affordable prices, making it easy to fill your hands with goodies.
All the food looked fresh, and there’s a customer lounge and merchant association in the center of the market, indicating a well-managed environment.
You can use Onnuri gift certificates at most shops, so if you have any remaining balance after the cashback, feel free to use it while shopping.
As the holidays approach, many shops offer special orders for traditional foods, and some even fry jeon (pancakes) on-site, making meal preparations much easier.
In one corner of the market, you can find nostalgic snacks, such as colorful traditional candies, roasted beans, and refreshing sikhye (sweet rice drink), which are hard to resist.
Exploring other alleys reveals shops selling dried fish, grains, clothing, and household items, adding to the fun of browsing. Some stores even have second floors, allowing for a leisurely visit.
Sinjeong Market is especially famous for its rich food alley, boasting restaurants with over 30 years of history that become bustling during lunchtime.
You can enjoy chewy handmade kalguksu, hearty pork soup, simple barley rice, and various snacks at affordable prices, making every visit a joyful experience.
Located near downtown Ulsan, Sinjeong Market is filled with warmth and a sense of community, making it feel like a living traditional market with every visit.
With abundant food and generous merchants, this traditional market is perfect for a date or a family outing, so I highly recommend a visit!
