Ham-an National Defense Park

Ham-an National Defense Park was established to honor the patriots who sacrificed and dedicated themselves for the country. Inside the park, you can find the Memorial Tower and various commemorative sculptures that naturally evoke the meaning of national defense and honor. The park also features wide, well-maintained walking paths, making it a great place to stroll leisurely while enjoying the surroundings. It offers a quiet and calm atmosphere, allowing visitors to reflect and spend meaningful time.
As I walked towards the park, I was greeted by beautiful yellow flowers lining the path, swaying gently in the breeze. The sight of the yellow flowers and butterflies enhanced the freshness of early summer, providing visual delight throughout my walk.
Below the bridge, the water flowed peacefully, contributing to the tranquil ambiance. Listening to the sound of the water while gazing at the scenery calmed my mind, allowing me to enjoy a relaxed moment.
Crossing the bridge to reach the park, I noticed the Taegeukgi flags hanging from the railings, which caught my attention. Watching the flags fluttering in the wind deepened my understanding of the park's significance, as I felt I was moving towards a place dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of the patriots.
Ham-an National Defense Park serves to commemorate the historical significance of the Ham-an area during the Nakdong River defense operations in the Korean War. This site was known for fierce battles, including the Battle of 661 Hill and the North-West Mountain Battle, where U.S. forces fought valiantly. Thanks to the sacrifices of the veterans, the Nakdong River defense line was preserved, paving the way for the successful Incheon Landing Operation, which changed the course of the war. Such sacrifices and dedication have laid the foundation for today's democratic and prosperous South Korea.
The well-maintained walking paths allowed me to feel close to nature while exploring the park's historical significance. There are also pavilions where visitors can take a break, enjoying the cool breeze and the surrounding scenery.
I encountered statues of Captain Robert Lee Timmons, Captain Kim Man-soo, and Lieutenant Jin Du-tae. Captain Timmons, who also served in World War II, was the commander of Company A in the 5th Regimental Combat Team of the U.S. 25th Division during the Korean War. Lieutenant Jin Du-tae displayed outstanding courage and leadership as the reconnaissance platoon leader in the Marine Corps during the Daegwallyeong offensive. Captain Kim Man-soo is known for holding back an attack from two Chinese battalions with just one platoon during the Battle of Betty Hill.
As I gazed at the memorial, I felt gratitude for the sacrifices and dedication of the veterans. In the calm atmosphere, I walked around the park with a solemn heart. This memorial was established to honor the spirit of sacrifice and achievements of those who served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, reminding us of the meaning of love for our country. The names of countries that participated in the Vietnam War are also inscribed, allowing us to reflect on the history of that time.
On both sides of the memorial, there are soldier sculptures that symbolize the dedication and sacrifice of veterans, effectively conveying the significance of the park.
Ham-an National Defense Park is a place where you can leisurely walk in nature while feeling its historical significance. It is a meaningful space to remember the sacrifices of veterans and reflect on the value of peace, making it a great spot to visit during your trip to Ham-an.
