Exploring Goguryeo Ironworks Village: A Cultural Experience

By Kim Won-deok
Located at the foot of Achasan Mountain in Achang-dong, Guri City, Gyeonggi Province,
I visited Goguryeo Ironworks Village.
Once known as a filming location for dramas and movies,
this place has transformed into a new space
after the set was dismantled.
Now, it operates as a historical and cultural space
with a museum and various historical experience programs,
allowing children and families to engage with Goguryeo culture
in a fun and accessible way.
The Goguryeo Ironworks Village Historical Cultural Exhibition Hall features
exhibits and educational programs centered around
Goguryeo artifacts excavated from the Achasan area.
It offers various educational programs that allow visitors
to experience and understand the lifestyle and culture of the Goguryeo people.
Admission to the exhibition is free,
and inside the exhibition hall, you can find
pottery, iron tools, and daily artifacts unearthed from
the Goguryeo fortresses on Achasan.
Particularly, the artifacts from Achasan are periodically
rotated for display, ensuring that each visit
offers something new.
Each artifact encapsulates the history and culture of Goguryeo
surrounding the Han River, captivating the attention of visitors.
The biggest attraction here is the hands-on experience programs.
There are various educational programs and special events
that families can participate in together,
including experience learning for toddlers and children.
The 'Playing with Wadang' program is one of the highlights.
Participants can learn about Goguryeo culture
while listening to cultural tourism guides and create
their own Wadang patterns, immersing themselves in historical culture.
The 'Fairy Tales and History' program for toddlers
has also received positive feedback.
This activity combines fairy tales with historical education,
allowing children to engage with Goguryeo culture
through play and storytelling.
Field trip programs for middle and high school students
are also actively conducted.
The exploration program, linking visits to the Achasan Goguryeo fortresses
and the museum, allows students to verify
the history found in their textbooks in real life.
It's considered to have high educational value.
It's advisable to check the schedule and reservation options
for experience programs in advance.
Programs vary by season and semester,
with some experiences requiring reservations.
It's also a good idea to explore nearby attractions
like the Achasan Goguryeo fortresses, Han River viewpoints,
Donggureung, and Jangja Lake Park.
Although the movie set has disappeared,
Goguryeo Ironworks Village continues to serve as a space
for learning and experiencing history and culture.
It has become a living history classroom for children
and a cultural space where adults can feel the essence of Goguryeo.
If you're considering a family outing on the weekend,
walking along the traces of Goguryeo from 1,500 years ago
at Goguryeo Ironworks Village at the foot of Achasan
would be a great choice.
