1. Special Exhibition: "Hyangri Mun-gyeon-rok - Portraits of Ulsan Figures"
The most notable exhibition at the Ulsan Museum right now is the special exhibition "Hyangri Mun-gyeon-rok." This exhibition highlights 136 figures who were active in the Ulsan region during the Joseon Dynasty, based on the 19th-century text Hyangri Mun-gyeon-rok. Rather than simply listing records, it reconstructs the social atmosphere and the lives of these figures using various materials and artifacts, allowing for a more vivid understanding of Ulsan's historical depth.
If you would like a guided tour, you can request one upon entry, and a guide will accompany you, making it especially recommended for those interested in local history or families who want to learn about the "people of old Ulsan."
2. Immersive Content Exhibition: "Rock Carvings of Bangudae"
This immersive content exhibition reinterprets one of Ulsan's representative heritages, the Bangudae rock carvings, using digital technology. It showcases dinosaur footprints from the Uljin Bangudae area, the passage of 7,000 years, and various patterns engraved on the rock, including whales and animals, along with a range of cultural experiences from the Joseon Dynasty.
The scenes carved by ancient people are brought to life through a large media wall and interactive screens, giving visitors a time-slip experience. The exhibition is particularly enjoyable for children, as moving footsteps change shapes and create new patterns.
This immersive exhibition operates at the top of every hour, as well as at 20 and 40 minutes past the hour, with a runtime of 19 minutes. The last entry is at 5:20 PM, and individuals can enter without a reservation, while groups of 10 or more must reserve at the information desk.
3. Permanent Exhibition Hall: 1st Floor Children's Museum, 2nd Floor Permanent Exhibition
One of the greatest advantages of the Ulsan Museum is its robust permanent exhibition space, which is always available for viewing. The 1st floor Children's Museum features many play-based, hands-on experiences, making it an exciting space for children to touch, move, and learn.
I often visit with my child, and it’s a perfect place for experiencing regional knowledge about Ulsan, as well as special cultural experiences related to automobiles, science, and history.
The Children's Museum is open from 09:30 AM to 04:30 PM, excluding a lunch break at noon, with each session lasting 50 minutes. Reservations can be made in advance through the Ulsan Metropolitan City public facility reservation service.
If there are available spots on the day of your visit, you can also register on-site.
The 2nd floor permanent exhibition hall is arranged chronologically, showcasing Ulsan's prehistoric culture, local history from the Joseon Dynasty, and its development into an industrial capital of South Korea. The spacious exhibition area allows for leisurely exploration, which can easily take 1-2 hours.
Currently, the Ulsan Museum is hosting two key exhibitions: the special exhibition "Hyangri Mun-gyeon-rok" and the immersive content exhibition "Rock Carvings of Bangudae," making it a particularly rich time for visitors.
With the addition of the permanent exhibitions and the children's museum, it provides a well-rounded experience for a full day of exploration.
If you are planning a trip to Ulsan this weekend or considering a day out, be sure to stop by the Ulsan Museum. It is the perfect space to comfortably experience the region's history and culture!
