Before we delve into the details, do you know why Korea's only Photo Biennale is held in Daegu?
Daegu has long been home to numerous 2-year and 4-year universities with photography departments.
This has naturally led to active exchanges and exhibition planning among photographers working in the region.
The exhibition, which started as a documentary-focused event, evolved and the first Daegu Photo Biennale was launched in 2006.
Now, in 2025, let's step into the tenth Daegu Photo Biennale!
The 10th Daegu Photo Biennale is held under the theme of 'Resonance of Life.'
Participating artists explore the relationships between humans and non-humans, and nature, centering on the theme of 'life'.
They question human-centered structures using various media such as photography, video, and installations.
The first space, 'From Earth to Sky,' opens the exhibition with a dialogue between cosmic forces and the Earth.
The artists focus on life that encompasses elements, matter, and atmosphere, transcending biological boundaries.
They express this through various media, including writing letters directly to plants.
In the second space, 'Connected to the Earth,' soil, trees, stones, and moss become silent companions of life.
Artists from different cultural and geographical backgrounds share a common sensibility about the invisible relationships that connect us to matter and time.
The third space, 'Journey to the Center of the Earth,' leads us to the unseen places of the world.
Here, matter, time, and memory intertwine, and unexpected forms of life emerge.
You can also appreciate the works of artists who share a common conviction.
In the fourth space, 'From the Animal's Perspective,' animals appear as subjects with unique emotions and intelligence.
The artists explore the relationships between humans and other living beings, blurring the boundaries between humanity and animality, or observing life in natural habitats.
The fifth space consists of works by Rinko Kawauchi.
From her early works, Rinko Kawauchi's photography has captured the mystery, splendor, fragility, and strength of life in various forms.
Her unique sensibility connects diverse beings with a single life force.
Experience Rinko Kawauchi's latest series, which sensuously unravels the multi-layered texture of life, at the Daegu Photo Biennale in the Daegu Culture and Arts Center!
In addition, the Daegu Photo Biennale also features a photobook exhibition space!
