I visited the exhibition 'International Hyper-Realism: The Most Perfect Illusion' right after it opened, and it was an incredibly mystical and enjoyable experience.
The usual admission fee for the Ulsan Museum of Art is 1,000 KRW. However, due to the scale of this special exhibition, the fee is set at 15,000 KRW. Ulsan citizens receive a 20% discount, bringing the cost down to 12,000 KRW.
It was satisfying to experience hyper-realistic artworks at a reasonable price that were once only available in world-famous museums.
Hyper-realism refers to a contemporary art movement that aims to depict subjects with extreme precision, often surpassing the detail found in photographs or real models.
Standing in front of the artworks in this special exhibition, one might exclaim, "Is this not a real person?" or "This is a painting, not a photograph!"
As you enter, you will be captivated by Kaz Hiro's stunning rendition of Salvador Dali, featuring his trademark upward-curled mustache and intense gaze, perfectly capturing even the finest skin wrinkles.
The exhibition flows from 'The Thrill of Reality: The Abyss Beyond the Skin' to 'The Gaze of Existence: The Aura of Stopped Objects', concluding with 'The Expansion of Boundaries: The Territory of Distorted Truth'.
Thirteen artists, including Sam Jinks, Kaz Hiro, Robin Illy, Diego Koi, Eloi M, Ramiro, and Ko Young-hoon, present 99 pieces that traverse the realms of reality and illusion.
This exhibition challenges us with the fundamental question: 'What is real, and what is an illusion?'
In the first section, 'The Thrill of Reality: The Abyss Beyond the Skin', we are confronted with the paradox of life through the perfect illusions of the human body, shaking our perceptions of reality.
Standing before the works, we face a profound challenge of distinguishing reality from illusion.
Mark Dennis, an American artist, is renowned for blending hyper-realism with surreal imagination, prompting viewers to continuously question the nature of reality.
The final section, 'The Expansion of Boundaries: The Territory of Distorted Truth', constructs a new world that transcends realism.
Artworks by Sam Jinks, known for his incredible detail using silicone and resin, leave a lasting impression that goes beyond technical perfection, inviting self-reflection.
