Discovering the Legend of Gyeon Hwon at the Mungyeong Gyeon Hwon Historic Site

Acha Village in Gaeun-eup, Mungyeong, is steeped in the legend of Gyeon Hwon, the founder of Later Baekje. It is said to be the village where he was born.
Although this place gave birth to a remarkable hero of the Later Three Kingdoms period, it had been lacking as a proper historic site, leading to many requests for improvements.
As you can see, until recently, there were no proper signposts or landmarks at the village entrance or around the historic site.
Thanks to the renovation project, various types of signage have been added, giving the historic site a new lease on life.

The truth is that the general public often lacks background knowledge about Gyeon Hwon.
However, this renovation project provides easily understandable information about Gyeon Hwon and the historic site, making it interesting and informative to explore the historical narrative.
One of the most noticeable improvements is the newly renovated public restroom, which was previously old and outdated.
Although I didn't take a picture, a clean parking area has also been newly established at the entrance of the historic site.
These thoughtful touches for visitors to the Gyeon Hwon Historic Site are truly commendable.
It is also encouraging that local residents have been voluntarily managing and maintaining the area around the historic site for a long time.
The Gyeon Hwon Historic Site is divided into areas such as Geumhagyo Bridge, Geumhagul Cave, Geumhajeong Pavilion, and Sungwijeon Shrine, all of which are related to the birth legend of Gyeon Hwon.
Simply put, it dispels the common notion that Gyeon Hwon, who founded Later Baekje, must have been born in the Chungcheong or Jeolla provinces.
For your information, the Gyeon Hwon Historic Site is located within Acha Village, so there are no separate closing days.
Also, there is no admission fee, so feel free to visit.
A combined trip with Gaeun-eup, famous for the Ajagae Market, is also a great idea.
Geumhagul Cave, famous as the birthplace of Gyeon Hwon, has a mysterious cave formation.
The legend is mysterious, fun, and has dramatic twists, making it feel like a novel.
Visit and read it slowly.
While there aren't any grand attractions or entertainment, the overall improvements for visitors make it well worth a visit during your Mungyeong trip.
It reminds me of the epic historical drama, Taejo Wang Geon, which is still talked about today.
I kept thinking about veteran actor Seo In-seok, who played the role of Gyeon Hwon.
