Discovering Hidden Artistic Gems: The Cheongsong Yasong Art Museum

Nestled away in Cheongsong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, lies a hidden cultural and artistic space: the Cheongsong Yasong Art Museum.
What makes the Yasong Art Museum truly renowned is the masterpiece of Korean artist Yasong (野松) Lee Won-jwa: <Cheongnyang Daewundo>.
This artwork is truly awe-inspiring in its scale.
Cheongnyang Daewundo is known as the world's largest realistic landscape painting, measuring a staggering 46 meters in width and 6.7 meters in height!
Due to its immense size, it cannot be displayed in a typical exhibition hall. A separate Cheongnyang Daewundo exhibition hall has been specially prepared just for this single piece.
Standing before this colossal artwork, I felt as though I had stepped into the deep valleys and lush forests of Juwangsan National Park.
It was a pleasure to experience the beautiful nature of Cheongsong through art.
The artist intended to capture not only the essence of Cheongsong's nature but also the spirit of the Korean landscape within this grand canvas.
If you're considering visiting an art museum in Cheongsong, I assure you that <Cheongnyang Daewundo> alone makes it well worth the trip.
If you want to visually experience the grandeur of Juwangsan Mountain, this is a must-see destination.
Another touching aspect of this art museum is its origin story.
The Cheongsong Yasong Art Museum is a county-run museum that was opened in 2005 after remodeling the former Sinchon Elementary School.
Isn't it wonderful how an abandoned school was transformed into a beautiful cultural space through the artistic spirit of a local master?
Yasong Lee Won-jwa spearheaded the museum's creation by donating a significant portion of his collection and artwork to Cheongsong County.
He donated approximately 350 pieces of Korean paintings and ceramic works, along with numerous art-related books, thereby instilling the value of art in a region that could have been culturally marginalized.
In addition to Cheongnyang Daewundo, the museum features three permanent exhibition halls, an art library, and an outdoor sculpture park, providing ample opportunities for cultural relaxation.
Completing the Juwangsan Experience with Art.
Visiting the Cheongsong Yasong Art Museum after witnessing the beauty of the bizarre rocks in Juwangsan National Park will deepen your appreciation.
I felt like I was fully experiencing the healing energy received from nature through the artwork of Cheongnyang Daewundo.
The museum is a great place for families or couples looking for things to do in Cheongsong, as it allows you to enjoy the magnificent nature, the tranquil atmosphere of a 폐교 (abandoned school), and the artistic spirit of a master all at once.
The Cheongsong Yasong Art Museum is a beautiful cultural space created by local love, featuring the overwhelming artwork of Cheongnyang Daewundo.
I highly recommend visiting before or after trekking Juwangsan!
