Citizen-Driven Library Programs in Gyeonggi Province

[Reporter: Yeseul Jo]
The Gyeonggi Provincial Library is gaining attention for its citizen-participation programs, particularly the '2026 Gyeonggi Provincial Library School'.
This initiative allows residents to plan and propose library programs, going beyond simple lectures to create hands-on experiences where citizens can design library tour courses and participate in demonstrations.
This program is part of the library's efforts to expand a culture of community involvement, aiming to transform libraries into cultural platforms that citizens actively shape.
The most notable feature of the '2026 Gyeonggi Provincial Library School' is its hands-on citizen participation. Participants will plan the library's tour programs after completing the training, designing courses tailored to various themes and user characteristics such as family, youth, reading groups, AI, and the environment.
Unlike traditional one-way education, this program emphasizes 'active citizen education' where participants plan and express content themselves.
The course will run from May 28 to July 2, every Thursday, totaling six sessions and 15 hours of instruction. It includes special lectures and practical training.
Graduates will have opportunities to engage in volunteer activities related to library interpretation and experience programs, making this more than just a course but a pathway to actual library operations.
In the current trend of public libraries expanding their community roles, this program stands out as a model of citizen-participation cultural policy.
Additionally, renowned economist Wooseok Hoon, author of 'The 880,000 Won Generation', will deliver a special lecture, discussing the role of public libraries and their impact on civil society.
On June 4, Kim Juyoung, head of the Library Business Division at the Seongbuk Cultural Foundation, will introduce the library's role in connecting citizens and local communities. On June 11, Gyeonggi Provincial Library Director Yoon Myunghee will share public library policies and the library's vision with residents.
Meanwhile, the '2026 Gyeonggi Provincial Library School' has closed its applications due to high interest from residents. There will be no on-site registration, but there is hope for additional training programs or related activities in the future.
