Festival Scenery and First Impressions

Chori Village is a quiet rural area that I visited for the first time. Although parking was a bit limited due to the small size of the village festival, there were nearby spaces available, making it quite convenient. The stream I saw while walking to the festival was also beautiful.
I crossed the bridge to reach the festival grounds. The snow that had fallen the previous day was scattered around, and the children were busy playing with it.
The Chori Kkong Kkong Festival area is small but filled with a lively festival atmosphere. Despite the harsh cold over the weekend, many people came to enjoy the festivities.
Sledding and Winter Activities
Chori Kkong Kkong Festival: Sledding Area
No winter fun is complete without sledding! You can ride thrilling sleds using tubes. Both adults and children can enjoy this exciting activity, with a usage fee of 10,000 won. The Chori Kkong Kkong Festival only requires payment for facility use, with no additional entrance fee.
Chori Kkong Kkong Festival: Ice Sledding Area
This area features an ice sledding rink where you can ride traditional wooden sleds or plastic sleds for a fee of 5,000 won. There is also an ice wall created on the mountainside, which looks even more stunning while sledding.
Kids’ Attractions
Chori Kkong Kkong Festival: Children's Amusement Park
The children's amusement park offers small rides like a mini train and a Viking ship. The children's faces showed a mix of fear and joy while riding the Viking ship.
One of the most popular attractions for kids was the Kkong Kkong Train, which takes them on a tour around the village and spins around the festival grounds, making it a hit among the little ones.
Waving goodbye to their parents, the children left the festival area and returned with bright smiles.
Traditional Winter Snacks
Chori Kkong Kkong Festival: Making Dalgona
You can also make Dalgona, and the sweet smell is irresistible. Other treats like grilled rice cakes, chewy snacks, and marshmallows are available, making for delightful winter snacks.
Speaking of winter treats, roasted chestnuts are a must! Putting chestnuts in a container and rolling them around cooks them perfectly. It’s essential to roll them evenly to avoid burning, and everyone focused intently on roasting them over the fire.
A pile of leftover briquettes was stacked in a corner of the festival area, bringing back nostalgic feelings since these days, it's rare to see briquettes with modern heating systems.
Hands-On Experiences and Food
Chori Kkong Kkong Festival: Smelt Fishing Experience
You can catch smelt with a net as they dart around, and surprisingly, the kids were quite skilled at it.
As the festival activities continue, you might get hungry, but there are delicious foods available at the concession stand, including rice cake soup, noodles, fish cake soup, tteokbokki, kimchi pancakes, radish pancakes, and fried smelt.
The kids wanted to try the fried smelt, and it turned out to be deliciously savory and light. The Muju Chori Kkong Kkong Festival was filled with joy and fun.
Festival Summary
While it may not be a large festival, there were plenty of enjoyable activities, and the festival is run by the village elders, adding a warm, friendly touch with reasonable prices. The Muju Chori Kkong Kkong Festival runs until February 18, 2026.
