A Tranquil Autumn Escape: Nammyeon Chorokjigi Village and the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree

October, which felt like a hint of early winter despite being autumn, has reached its final day.
When autumn arrives, many people seek out places for half-day or day trips.
A great place to enjoy the beautifully colored autumn foliage and spend some peaceful time is Nammyeon Chorokjigi Village.
Here, you'll find the Jo So-ang Memorial Hall, dedicated to the independence activist, and a magnificent zelkova tree that is over 850 years old. I visited with Byeolsan-i.
The Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree in Nammyeon Hwangbang-ri is located next to the Jo So-ang Memorial Hall, so you can use the parking lot together. Parking is free, so you can park comfortably and take a look around the zelkova tree and the Jo So-ang Memorial Hall.
Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree
Address: 87, Yangyeon-ro 173beon-gil, Nammyeon, Yangju-si, Gyeonggi-do (Old Address: 141-1, Hwangbang-ri, Nammyeon)
Designated as Natural Monument No. 278 and protected by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree is estimated to be over 850 years old.
It stands 18m tall with a circumference of 7.8m, and its crown diameter is 27m. Even from a distance, you can feel the grandeur of the zelkova tree.
The Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree, which has been guarding the village in the same spot for a long time, exudes an impressive aura that is immediately noticeable.
The tree is so large, from its height to its widely spread branches, that you have to take pictures from far away to capture the entire tree in the frame. Standing in front of it, you'll naturally find yourself tilting your head back to look up at it.
It is said that the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree, designated as a natural monument, was planted by an ancestor of the Miryang Park clan who lived in Nammyeon Hwangbang-ri.
The branches spread out in all directions, and when you look up close, you can't help but keep looking up at its magnificence.
The Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree is located in a National Heritage Protection Zone, where smoking, cooking, setting up tents, littering, inline skating, and bringing pets are prohibited.
As the tree is large, its appearance changes with the seasons. You can see the four seasons displayed next to the information sign in front of the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree.
It is well-maintained, so it is lush in spring, abundant in summer, beautifully colored with autumn foliage in fall, and has spectacular snowscapes in winter.
The sunset behind the memorial hall creates a picturesque scene with the beautifully colored maple trees, ecological pond, and Jo So-ang Memorial Park, making it feel like you're in a fairy tale.
Designated as one of the Eight Scenic Views of Nammyeon, Yangju, the surrounding area is well- 조성되어 with trails perfect for a stroll. If you're looking for a day trip or half-day trip to enjoy the autumn foliage, I highly recommend it!
Next to the zelkova tree and pavilion, there are stairs leading to the Jo So-ang Memorial Hall, park, and Hwangbang-i Waterfront Trail. If stairs are inconvenient, you can use the path towards the memorial hall on the right.
To the left of the deck stairs, there are clean public restrooms, and there are also restrooms inside the Jo So-ang Memorial Hall, so you don't have to worry about restroom access.
Across from the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree, in front of the memorial hall, there is an ecological pond, and next to it is the restored traditional Korean house of Jo So-ang, where you can feel the serene beauty of traditional Korean architecture.
There is also the Hwangbang-i Waterfront Trail. If you enter here, you'll find a forest bathing area, a birch forest, and a forest experience center for children. Don't just see the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree; take a walk along the Wondang Reservoir path, where you can enjoy the beautiful reservoir scenery.
From the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree and the Jo So-ang Memorial Hall to the memorial park and the Hwangbang-i Waterfront Trail, it's a great place to take a walk in the fall and spend some peaceful time. I highly recommend it to those looking for places to go in the fall.
Jo So-ang (1887 - 1958)
[Pen name: So-ang / Real name: Yong-eun]
The Jo So-ang Memorial Hall is dedicated to the Secretary-General of the State Council of the Provisional Government and Minister of Foreign Affairs, who laid the foundation for the Republic of Korea's health charter and announced the Declaration of Independence in 1919.
The Nammyeon Chorokjigi Village, including the Hwangbangri Zelkova Tree, is a place where you can enjoy autumn amidst serene scenery and spend some quiet time. Create unforgettable memories here this fall!
