Introduction
By Hong-dae Choi, 14th SNS Reporting Group
After becoming a member of the SNS Reporting Group, I explored the area of Ham-an to share its stories. Among the places I visited, Gunbuk, located to the west of the center of Ham-an County, used to be a bustling area with many travelers, but now it quietly holds remnants of the past.
Gunbuk Station and Its Historical Role
Gunbuk Station was once a stop on the Gunbuk Line, which transported rice harvested in Ham-an to Masan Port during the Japanese occupation. Today, it operates as a station on the Gyeongjeon Line, making it a space where painful history intersects with modern life.
Gunbuk-myeon in Ham-an County formed a central area around Gunbuk Traditional Market, serving as a hub for transportation and daily life in the western region. As the station has relocated and new history is being built, the railway conditions have improved significantly with the double-tracking of the Gyeongjeon Line between Masan and Jinju.
Old and New Station Areas
Currently, Gunbuk Station is elevated and located about 1.2 km from the old site of Gunbuk Station, now known as Gunbuk Yeonin Independence Park. It's a pleasant spot for a leisurely walk and serves as a walking destination to explore the railway facilities and local history.
Gunbuk Dolmen Site
In front of Gunbuk Station lies the Gunbuk Dolmen Site, which dates back to the Bronze Age. These dolmens, also known as 'goindol,' are representative tombs of the era, primarily associated with the ruling class possessing economic power and political authority. Designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Monument No. 183 in 1997, the site was renamed in 2018.
Inside Gunbuk Station
Inside Gunbuk Station, while the number of passengers may not be large, it maintains a steady flow of visitors. The station features a waiting room and service area, with the platform accessible via an elevator. Currently, only the Mugunghwa train stops here, serving as a connection point for local transportation.
The internal facilities are well-maintained and quite clean.
Nearby Historical Landmarks
If you arrive at Gunbuk Station, consider visiting nearby landmarks related to independence, such as the Lee Tae-jun Memorial Hall and sites commemorating the many independence activists from Ham-an.
As Gunbuk Station has recently relocated, a steam locomotive monument has been installed at the old station site to commemorate its historical value as a terminus during the Japanese occupation, making it a place to reflect on history while enjoying a peaceful park atmosphere.
Travel Reflection
With an increasing demand for family trips focused on rest and meaningful experiences, domestic train travel is becoming a popular way to create lasting memories. The current travel trend moves beyond mere sightseeing to local experiences, and Gunbuk, while not flashy, offers a charming destination where one can slowly walk and feel the blend of history and everyday life.
Visiting Gunbuk Station for a memorable journey through this area seems like a wonderful idea.
