A Day Trip to Songchu: Exploring the Suburban Line

During these harsh winter months, a convenient day trip is often the most appealing option.
Recently, I took a trip to Songchu via the suburban line from Uijeongbu Station.
The suburban line tickets can be purchased at the station, and reservations can also be made through the Korail app for the Mugunghwa train.
Inside Uijeongbu Station, the signposts are well organized, making it easy to find the ticketing area, which has two kiosks available.
After selecting the departure and arrival stations, I chose the type of ticket (one-way or round trip), date, number of passengers, and seats, followed by checking the train schedule to finalize my ticket reservation.
Even first-time users will find it easy to book tickets by following the steps provided.
On the way to the boarding area, I noticed information about travel packages operated by Korail Tourism Development that connect to Yangju.
Currently, there are day tours available that utilize the suburban line, including:
- The "Milky Way Tour" visiting the world’s largest Seoul Milk factory.
- The "Winter ON! Thrilling Winter Adventure" for the winter season.
In the Jangheung area, there are many winter activities available, such as sledding and experiential tourist attractions, which pair well with the suburban line schedule.
As my train time approached, I headed directly to the platform.
On the way down, I saw the suburban line timetable posted, allowing me to double-check the schedule before departure.
The timetable was separated by weekdays and weekends, listing departure times from Uijeongbu to Daegok and vice versa, which would be helpful for planning.
The journey to the end of the line takes about an hour, while my trip from Uijeongbu to Songchu took around 15 minutes.
Upon arriving at the platform, I spotted the yellow train. I had previously seen it pass by, but seeing it up close allowed me to appreciate the unique atmosphere of the suburban line.
The train was short, and I boarded according to the seat number on my ticket. The interior was similar to the Mugunghwa train, clean and comfortable.
Even though it was a short distance, the gentle swaying of the train and the view outside made the journey feel like an adventure.
While the winter scenery was calm, I enjoyed gazing at the quiet towns and mountains we passed.
Before I knew it, we arrived at Songchu Station.
Located in Jangheung-myeon, Songchu Station is unmanned but has restrooms and a waiting area.
The waiting room is heated, making it relatively warm during winter, and it has direct access to the outside.
Songchu Station operates from 6:50 AM to 10:20 PM.
The Yangju area, including Songchu and Jangheung, offers many attractions even in winter.
With sledding, experiential tourist spots, and art galleries, it’s a great destination for family outings or light winter trips.
Taking the suburban line is particularly convenient for those planning a day trip in winter without a car.
Although the suburban train trip is brief, the experience of riding the train brings a small change to daily life.
When the cold weather makes long trips daunting, taking a day to explore winter destinations via the suburban line could be a refreshing idea.
I hope you consider experiencing the suburban line alongside the winter attractions in Jangheung this season.
