A Creative Family Outing at Jangsaengpo Art Stay in Ulsan

Jangsaengpo Art Stay in Ulsan supports artists' creative activities by providing them with a stable environment.
I had seen it before when I visited Jangsaengpo, but I wasn't sure what kind of space it was, so I hesitated to go inside.
However, I heard that there was a cultural program where the whole family could create their own artwork with a resident artist, so I visited on the weekend.
It was an honor to work with the artist in a small group of eight people per session. Shall we step into that time together?
Jangsaengpo Art Stay is a renovated old Shinjin Inn, where sailors stayed before setting sail during the whale hunting industry in the 1970s.
It was reopened in September 2018, preserving the original form of the inn, which makes it feel more unique and special.
Parking is available free of charge for visitors to Jangsaengpo Art Stay.
Jangsaengpo is usually crowded with tourists on weekends, but thanks to the parking, we were able to visit comfortably with our children.
From the parking lot, you can enter the alley following the entrance arrow and find Jangsaengpo Art Stay.
The 'Into the Artwork with a Resident Artist!' program is a <Wood&Drawing> experience where you can freely draw and create artwork using various materials, focusing on wood.
The program that was held this time took place every weekend for the month of November with a different theme.
It was designed to be never boring, even if you came several times, with themes such as making wooden magnets, reinterpreting masterpieces with various materials, drawing our house, and wood-cutting miniatures.
I didn't get to see the other spaces of Jangsaengpo Art Stay, including the office, as they are for the artists, but the program was held in the Art Sensory Playground inside the Art Stay.
The capacity per session was 8 people, so some sessions were booked early. It seemed that the capacity was kept small because the Art Sensory Playground space itself wasn't very large.
First, they gave us oil pastels and drawing paper.
They said it was a warm-up exercise before creating the artwork.
Maybe the artists also take time to warm up like this before creating their work? Haha.
Usually, when you apply for art programs, most of them are for children, so it's rare for parents to participate.
But Jangsaengpo Art Stay is a program where the 'whole family' can enjoy it together, so I applied and felt both awkward and good.
When I held the drawing paper and oil pastels, the children drew well without thinking, but I needed time to think.
After thinking about it, I ended up drawing my children's faces.
After drawing the picture, we went through the process of decorating it with colored tape.
They prepared several sheets of drawing paper per person, so we could draw pictures with tape or freely express our thoughts.
The artist helped us from the side and gave us a lot of support, so the children were able to decorate more freely and to their heart's content.
After our hands were warmed up to some extent, they gave us each a wooden board.
The task was to draw the desired picture and make a wooden magnet.
If you draw a sketch with colored pencils first, the artist will cut it according to the shape.
Once it's cut, color it in nicely and you're done!
They even attached a wooden magnet to the back, so it's perfect for sticking on our refrigerator.
After the Jangsaengpo Art Stay program, I visited Creative Studio 131, which is within walking distance.
This was because the artist who had conducted the program was holding an exhibition.
Under the theme of 'The Gaze of Others,' I was able to encounter landscapes that we can easily see in our daily lives.
Just viewing the artwork made me feel like I was taking a walk, so I was able to view the artwork more intimately.
Even if you don't participate in the program, if you come to Jangsaengpo, it would be good to stop by and see the artwork.
Thanks to this kind of cultural program, I had a great time having the opportunity to create artwork with my whole family and learning about Jangsaengpo Art Stay.
I look forward to the activities and programs of Jangsaengpo Art Stay even more in the future.
