The '2026 Gyeonggi Peace Square Lawn Film Festival & Cultural Arts Performance' finally kicked off on August 1 at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Northern Office's Gyeonggi Peace Square. Attendees enjoyed vibrant live performances, outdoor films on a large screen, and comfortable indoor exhibitions. Here’s a lively recap of the opening event and a look at the upcoming schedule.
Summer Cultural Retreat in the City: 'Gyeonggi Peace Square'
Gyeonggi Peace Square, located in front of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Northern Office, is an open cultural space representing northern Gyeonggi. The spacious lawn hosts various events, performances, and exhibitions throughout the seasons, making it a beloved spot for residents seeking a comfortable retreat.
The annual 'Lawn Film Festival & Cultural Arts Performance' is a highlight of summer at Gyeonggi Peace Square. It offers a perfect opportunity for families, couples, and friends to create special summer memories while enjoying emotional performances on the lush lawn and films on the big screen.
This year, the event runs from August 1 to August 30, every Saturday and Sunday, as well as on August 17 (substitute holiday). Cultural arts performances start at 5:30 PM, followed by outdoor films at 7 PM. Admission is completely free, and no prior reservation is required, allowing everyone to visit and enjoy at their leisure.
On the first day of August, despite the heat, many citizens flocked to Gyeonggi Peace Square to enjoy a summer retreat. The scene of people spreading out mats and enjoying the performances while waiting for the films was vibrant and impressive.
Notably, the venue offers free rentals of mats, camping chairs, and mosquito repellent, making it easy for passersby to stop by and enjoy the festival without any prior preparation.
Emotional Performances to Beat the Heat
The opening act of the cultural arts performance was singer Tejong, known from 'Sing Again 3'. His lyrical live performance, accompanied by sweet guitar melodies, captivated the audience with songs like 'Forest', 'Falling Slowly', and 'Quietly, Completely, Forever'. His resonant voice transformed the hot afternoon into a refreshing outdoor concert.
Next on stage was the powerhouse vocalist Yeo-eun, the winner of 'Masked Singer'. She elevated the atmosphere with her powerful renditions of the beloved drama 'Reply 1988' OST 'Let's Forget Now' and her winning song 'Becoming a Dandelion Seed'. The powerful high notes of her encore song 'My Way' resonated throughout the square, earning her a thunderous applause from the audience.
In front of the stage, many stayed in their seats to wait for the film screening, even as the sun lingered. The ability to seamlessly enjoy high-quality live performances and films in one place is a unique charm of the 'Gyeonggi Peace Square Lawn Film Festival'.
At 7 PM, the opening film 'Life is Beautiful' was screened. As Korea's first jukebox musical film, it combined familiar and delightful music with humor and gentle emotions, enhancing the romantic atmosphere of the sunset outdoor theater. The melodies lingered even after the film ended, making it a fitting opening film for audiences of all ages.
On August 2, the film 'Frozen 2' will be screened, offering a cool winter gift to families with children. A diverse lineup of films will be screened every weekend and holiday until August 30, including 'Sweet and Sour', 'The Intern', 'The King’s Affection', and 'Raya and the Last Dragon'. Additionally, various cultural arts performances such as acoustic shows, bands, traditional music, crossover, musical gala shows, magic, and bubble performances will be presented weekly.
For a comfortable indoor retreat while waiting for outdoor events, visiting the 'Peace Gallery' located within Gyeonggi Peace Square is also recommended. The Peace Gallery is a free cultural space for residents, hosting various exhibitions throughout the seasons.
Currently, the 'Four Artists' exhibition is running until August 26, featuring works in oil, acrylic, and watercolor by artists Lee Mi-ae, Kwon Hyuk-ran, Yang Jin-sook, and Yeo Guk-gyeong.
