A Day in the Life: Hongdae, Old Friends, and Birthday Celebrations

Life as a "Power J" (motto: plan everything) often takes us across the country, and this week was no exception. From high school reunions in the bustling streets of Hongdae to serious academic pursuits at Pusan National University, my schedule was packed with nostalgia and discovery. Whether it's the frustration of a losing streak at a PlayStation room or the quiet pride of attending a major academic conference, every moment is a piece of the puzzle.
Highlights of this journey included a "Legendary" (read: 0 wins, 7 losses) soccer gaming session at Hongdae Narnia PlayStation Room and a much-needed caffeine break at the world-renowned Momos Coffee (모모스커피) in Busan. Join me as I reflect on hometown memories in Incheon, birthday celebrations featuring Kkanpunggi, and my deep dive into the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Hongdae Hustle: PlayStation Rooms and Dakgalbi
Meeting high school friend Myung-gyun in Hongdae is always a trip down memory lane. Our day started with a bit of a wait at the PlayStation room—classic part-timer tardiness—but once inside, the competition was fierce. Unfortunately, I managed to set a record for the most losses in a single day. To soften the blow, Myung-gyun treated me to a fantastic Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) lunch. It’s amazing how food and games can make you feel like a teenager again.
Hometown Nostalgia and New Beginnings
Passing through Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, was bittersweet. My very first part-time job at VIPS is now just a memory as the location has changed hands. However, visiting friends like Dr. Ho and meeting his dog, Yeon-du, reminded me that some things—like the calming temperament of an aging pet—only get better with time. These small moments of home recording and quiet company are the ultimate recharge.
Busan Academic Vibes: PNU and Momos Coffee
Returning to my alma mater, Pusan National University, for the Korean German Literature Association's Fall Conference was a proud moment. Listening to expert presentations in my field and seeing former professors brought back a sense of academic rigor. Of course, no trip to Busan is complete without stopping by Momos Coffee. Even if you've already eaten, the atmosphere alone is worth the visit, serving as a hub for coffee lovers from Seoul to Busan.
Birthday Traditions and Anime Debates
October 14th marked a special birthday! I celebrated with the ultimate comfort food: Chinese Kkanpunggi. Following the academic conference, it was time to indulge in my favorite hobby—anime. Watching <Jujutsu Kaisen 0> with Dr. Song was the perfect end to a busy week. Whether it's discussing literature or debating the best anime episodes, these intellectual and pop-culture exchanges are what keep life interesting.
A Glimpse into the Future
As I plan for more conferences and reunions, I’m reminded that "good things start when you least expect them." Sitting alone in a corner of an alma mater might feel lonely at first, but it’s often where the best observations happen. I’m looking forward to more travels and sharing those hidden gems with all of you.
Would you like me to find the best-reviewed Dakgalbi restaurants in Hongdae for your next outing, or should I look up the upcoming academic schedule for Pusan National University?
