The vibrant neon sign with a Chinese aesthetic is hard to miss! I visited Shanghai Mala Skewers in Yeonnam-dong, and while it was a bit quiet during dinner time, it's usually a popular spot with a decent wait. But don't worry, the turnover is quick!
There's a cute Mala Skewer cup-shaped model in front of the store, perfect for Instagram-worthy photos. It's a great photo zone!
This is a popular place to visit near Hongik University Station these days.
It's primarily a takeout store, but you can eat outside. Even the trash can for the skewers is shaped like a cup!

They offer a diverse selection of 36 types of skewers. Most are priced around ₩1,000, making it budget-friendly. Perfect for when your wallet feels light!
✔️ All skewers in one basket must be the same spice level.
If you want to try both Level 1 and Level 3 spice, you need to use separate baskets for each spice level. I chose Level 0, and my husband chose Level 2, so we used different baskets.
They also have a variety of Chinese drinks (Bing Tang Xue Li, Cha Pai, Bing Hong Cha, Eshu Pai, Wang Lao Ji) so you can enjoy your Mala Skewers with an authentic touch. 🍹🍹

You can find vegetables like zucchini, sweet potato, cauliflower, king oyster mushrooms, eggplant, shishito peppers, garlic chives, and garlic. Even though they are common ingredients, they transform into something extraordinary when made into Mala Skewers!

4. What We Ate
A rainy day date at Yeontral Park was even better with the numbing sensation of Shanghai Mala Skewers! 🌧️
We chose water cake, king oyster mushrooms, cheese sticks, tornado potato, shrimp, cheese rice cake, quail eggs, shrimp tempura, shrimp balls, fish balls, zucchini, chicken thighs, fried tofu pockets (japchae), sweet potato, and baby cuttlefish! We chose a lot!
The rice cake skewers are crispy and delicious. It's my favorite at Shanghai Mala Skewers in Yeonnam-dong. If you like garaetteok (Korean rice cake), you must try this! 👍
My husband loved the tornado potato the most and said he might come back just for that. He fell in love with it at first bite! The combination of crispy potato and the spicy Mala flavor was perfect with beer! 🍻

I purposely ordered Level 0 out of curiosity, and it was slightly spicy but not too intense. Level 2 was quite spicy and numbing. If you're a spice lover, start with at least Level 2! 😂
There was more food than I thought, so I took it home and had it with beer. It was a perfect combination! The spicy flavor made the beer taste even more refreshing, so it went down smoothly. 🍺
