Last week, I visited a local restaurant at Hyeopjae Beach recommended by relatives living in Jeju. This place is known for its exquisite local dishes made with high-quality domestic ingredients.
1. Location of the Restaurant
The restaurant I visited, Hyeopjae Seombada, is located just a 5-minute drive from Hyeopjae Beach. Its tranquil exterior caught my eye, and I appreciated the spacious, standalone building with parking available. The restaurant operates daily from 8:00 AM to 9:30 PM.
Upon entering, I was greeted by a spacious and open interior. The modern decor was inviting, and there were plenty of tables, including options for group gatherings.
The local restaurant at Hyeopjae Beach offers a variety of Jeju dishes, showcasing an extensive menu with individual plates, sets, grilled dishes, and stews.
2. A Grand Spread
As the main dishes I ordered were served, the table transformed into a feast before my eyes, filled with vibrant and plentiful dishes.
3. Thoughtfully Prepared Side Dishes
The homemade side dishes at this restaurant exceeded my expectations. I particularly enjoyed the fresh and fragrant seasoned greens, which I couldn't resist going back for more.
They also served pickles made with beets, sliced into long pieces for a delightful crunch, and their sweet and sour flavor made for a perfect palate cleanser.
Another unique side dish was the fried mackerel, which had a crispy texture and a sweet and spicy sauce that was evenly distributed.
The tofu fritters were visually appealing, golden brown and light, pairing perfectly with a mildly sweet dipping sauce.
The seaweed soup was rich and flavorful, infused with the fresh aroma of the ocean, making it a delightful addition to the meal.
Steamed cabbage was the perfect size for wrapping and was fresh and tender, making it a great side dish to accompany the main courses.
Participating in a review event at the restaurant rewarded me with a serving of fried fish, freshly cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside, and wonderfully flavorful.
4. Main Dishes Reflecting Jeju
The grilled abalone was served on a hot plate, making it even more appetizing. Each abalone was large and plump, allowing us to share generously.
The buttery flavor was infused throughout, providing a rich taste without being overwhelming. The texture was delightful, showcasing the unique chewiness of fresh abalone.
The braised mackerel came in a rustic earthenware pot, with a generous portion and a rich red sauce that had absorbed into the fish.
Surprisingly, there was no fishy smell, and it was pleasantly spicy, enhanced by the natural richness of the fish.
One of the restaurant's signature dishes is the grilled cutlassfish, which had a stunning appearance with a mix of silver and golden hues. The taste was exceptional, with no fishy odor and a deliciously crispy skin.
The flesh was thick and moist, retaining its delicate flavor, complemented by a subtle smokiness.
Personally, I was most excited about the braised cutlassfish fillet. It was served in a large pot, simmering and flavorful, and was further cooked at the table.
The dish was not overly spicy, with a refreshing finish thanks to the addition of radish. The boneless fish was incredibly tender, melting in my mouth.
I enjoyed mixing the flavorful fish with rice, creating a delightful combination.
The abalone porridge was also substantial, perfect for a meal on its own, showcasing the rich flavors of the sea.
5. Overall Impression of the Local Restaurant
I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh fruit juice available for purchase, which was a refreshing way to cleanse my palate. This restaurant at Hyeopjae Beach offers fresh seafood and quality ingredients, making it a fantastic place to experience authentic Jeju local cuisine.
