Hallagachi Jungmun: A Must-Visit Braised Cutlassfish Restaurant in Seogwipo, Jeju


I have a friend who lives in Jeju Island, so I asked her for recommendations before my trip. She highly recommended Hallagachi Jungmun for braised cutlassfish (galchi jorim) in Seogwipo, so it was the first place I visited upon arrival.

Hallagachi specializes in Jeju local cuisine and is conveniently located not far from the airport. It's a great option if you're looking for a place to eat on your way to or from the airport.
There's plenty of parking available, so you don't have to worry about it if you're driving a rental car. It's conveniently located right in front of the restaurant, so you can park and go straight in to eat.
As a recommended restaurant for braised cutlassfish in Seogwipo, the tables were quite full. The overall atmosphere was warm and comfortable, and I liked the pleasant space where I could eat comfortably.
I saw many people eating with their children, and they also had baby chairs available. I was impressed by their attention to detail, making it comfortable for everyone to eat.
Aprons were disposable and hung on a visible wall.
Additional side dishes were available at the self-service bar. I'm usually hesitant to ask for more side dishes, but I was satisfied with the unlimited refills at the self-service corner.
All the side dishes are made in-house, and the owner's cooking skills are amazing. There was a reason why people kept going back and forth to refill the side dishes.
There is no separate menu for braised cutlassfish. The Halla Set is the standard, and you can add anything else you want to eat. I made a reservation and was able to eat right away without waiting long.
1. Elegant Korean Cuisine
The set includes various Jeju local dishes based on grilled and braised cutlassfish. We ordered the set for 4 people, and the generous portions for ₩139,000 felt reasonable.
2. Side Dishes Worth Buying Separately
As soon as I tasted the side dishes, I was reminded of the homemade meals my parents used to make, so I asked if they were available for purchase. Unfortunately, they are made in-house and not sold separately, so you can only enjoy them at the restaurant.
3. Grilled Cutlassfish with a Unique Flavor
I came here based on a recommendation for braised cutlassfish, but the grilled cutlassfish was also memorable because I had never seen it presented like this before.
Fortunately, the staff removed the bones for us, so we could enjoy only the boneless fish. It's usually messy and inconvenient to debone fish, but here, they take care of everything.
They quickly removed the bones without disturbing our meal and cleared them away, making it easy to eat. The cutlassfish was tender, meaty, and plump, so one fish was enough to enjoy the flavor. It was seasoned with salt, so it wasn't bland on its own and went well with rice.
4. Braised Cutlassfish without Bones
The highlight of this recommended braised cutlassfish restaurant in Seogwipo is the braised dish, which is served raw and cooked at the table.
It includes baby octopus, abalone, and shrimp, making it rich in seafood.
As it cooks at the table, the spicy sauce blends with the seafood, enhancing the savory flavor. The enoki mushrooms and various vegetables are also great, and the sauce alone is fantastic.
After it was all cooked, I tried the cutlassfish first, and the plump meat with the spicy sauce was amazing. The flavor was so deep that I understood why my friend recommended this restaurant.
5. Dishes that Capture the Essence of Jeju
The rice is abalone pot rice, with so much abalone that you can barely see the rice grains. You can scoop the rice into a separate bowl and eat it, and then pour hot water over the scorched rice to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea).
The seaweed soup was also well-seasoned and had a rich broth that went well with any dish. Soup is essential on a Korean table, and seaweed soup is a thoughtful touch.
The fried cutlassfish comes with soy sauce for dipping. It's crispy on the outside and savory on the inside, not greasy, so I kept reaching for it.
There was also a lot of cutlassfish meat inside the fried fish, so the ratio with the batter was just right. I thought the fish meat would crumble, but the soft texture was still there, which I loved.
The tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) was made with black pork, which made it even more special. Black pork is a must-try dish in Jeju, and the salty and sweet sauce added an explosion of flavor.
The abalone butter grill had a strong butter flavor, and the more you chew the chewy abalone, the richer the savory taste becomes.
Finally, the dombe cold pork slices were plated beautifully, catching my eye. The sauce that came with it went well with the pork, better than ssamjang (soybean paste) or wasabi.
The soft and savory taste was better than regular boiled pork, and the flavor was clean. I liked all the dishes in the set menu, so Hallagachi is a place I'd love to visit again. I was recommended this restaurant for braised cutlassfish in Seogwipo, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Jeju Island.
