Exploring Seongsan Ilchulbong and Local Delicacies in Jeju

I recently heard the delightful news that the canola flowers in Jeju have bloomed, so I headed to Seongsan to enjoy the beautiful sights. While other areas were still waiting for their flowers to bloom, Seongsan was already in full bloom, and I was filled with anticipation!
Not wanting to just see the flowers and leave, I also hiked up Seongsan Ilchulbong and enjoyed a meal at a recommended restaurant in the area, making for a very satisfying day.
1. Visiting Seongsan Ilchulbong & Canola Flower Viewing
I woke up to a pleasant morning with mild temperatures and clear skies, which made my trip to Seongsan Ilchulbong even more enjoyable. Although it had been a while since my last visit, the majestic sunrise peak was still as stunning as ever. It's no wonder it is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The entrance fee varies depending on the hiking trail chosen, with a fee of 5,000 KRW for adults to reach the summit. However, the general walking paths are free of charge.
It took about 15-20 minutes to reach the summit, primarily via stairs, which was a bit challenging. However, the breathtaking view at the top made it all worth it!
After descending, I moved on to a nearby canola flower field where the yellow flowers bloomed endlessly alongside stone walls. It felt like a scene from a fairy tale, and I took my time walking through the flowers, soaking in the spring atmosphere.
2. Restaurant 'Eo-Chon' in Seogwipo
As my stomach started to growl, I made my way to a restaurant I had saved, known for its popularity among locals. It was conveniently located just a 5-minute drive from Seongsan Ilchulbong.
The restaurant had a cozy and clean ambiance, and what stood out the most was the friendly service from the owner and staff, which made my dining experience even more enjoyable.
The restaurant was well-equipped with conveniences like disposable aprons, wet wipes, and high chairs, making it easy for everyone to enjoy their meal.
3. Delicious Menu with Great Value
The menu featured a variety of seafood dishes, including sashimi, grilled fish, and seafood ramen. There were also meat options available, like pork belly and kimchi stew, ensuring that everyone could find something to enjoy.
Feeling quite hungry after our hike and flower viewing, we ordered seafood ramen, stir-fried squid, and braised hairtail. The prices were reasonable, with lunch specials at just 10,000 KRW per serving.
The table was beautifully set with six side dishes that were so delicious I couldn’t help but ask for refills!
4. Seafood Ramen Full of Ocean Flavor
The seafood ramen was the first dish I tried, and it was delicious! The broth was rich and flavorful, unlike typical instant ramen. It was made from freshly caught seafood, providing a natural umami taste.
The noodles were perfectly cooked and had a delightful chewy texture. After slurping up the noodles and sipping the broth, I felt completely refreshed, especially after a night of drinking.
5. Braised Hairtail & Stir-fried Squid
Next, I tried the braised hairtail, which was a true rice thief! The balance of spicy, sweet, and salty flavors was perfect, and the fish was tender and flavorful.
The stir-fried squid with pork was equally impressive, with a delightful balance of sweetness and spiciness that was incredibly addictive.
If you're planning a trip to the Seongsan area in eastern Jeju, I highly recommend visiting Seongsan Ilchulbong and the canola flower fields in the morning, followed by a hearty meal at Eo-Chon.
