Discovering 'Kal-Don' in Gwangyang: A Delicious Noodle and Cutlet Adventure

![]()
Hello everyone!
Happy Thursday! Just one more day until the weekend!! So exciting!
Lately, many new restaurants have opened in Jungma-dong, Gwangyang, and I've been trying to conquer them one by one. This time, I visited 'Kal-Don,' a restaurant specializing in *kalguksu* (knife-cut noodles) and *donkatsu* (pork cutlet).
It's a surprisingly uncommon name for such a common dish. I was surprised to find that the name is quite rare! I think they chose a great name! It's easy to remember but not so common!
Parking is available in the public parking lot across from the building or along the streets.
Even though it hasn't been open for long, Kal-Don gives off a strong vibe of a popular restaurant in Jungma-dong, Gwangyang. I was surprised to see so many customers even from a distance!
The restaurant is new, so the interior is clean and spacious, which was a big plus from the start. I can't visit a restaurant that is not hygienic, no matter how popular it is, am I the only one who thinks this way?
As expected of a popular restaurant in Gwangyang, the place was packed, but thanks to making a reservation, we were able to get in quickly! Naver reservations are the best!
While waiting, we looked at the large menu posters and decided what to order. Always struggling to make up my mind!
Can you believe you can get a meal for ₩6,000 these days?!
Kal-Don's signature *Kal-Don Kalguksu* is made with broth simmered carefully for 140 minutes and freshly made noodles, plus kimchi made fresh every morning. All this for ₩6,000?! A real steal!
Even though the restaurant is spacious, it was full of customers. I quickly took some photos, being careful not to bother anyone.
See that empty spot over there? That's our reserved table!
Visiting with a reservation meant we had a table waiting for us. It's a small thing, but it feels good to be taken care of! The water is also provided in bottled water, making it very hygienic.
With so many customers, the staff was busy, but we didn't have to call them. We could easily place our order using the kiosk at the table, which was convenient and fast!
There were menu posters all over the walls. Why does food always look more delicious when you see it big?
Our menu choices were: Perilla Seed *Kalguksu*, Kal-Don Western-style King *Donkatsu*, and a small portion of *Bossam* (boiled pork belly).
We always order three dishes for the two of us, so how can I ever lose weight? I have a wedding photoshoot coming up... I hope Photoshop can help!
This is the precious kimchi they make fresh every day! A *kalguksu* restaurant has to have delicious kimchi to be a good restaurant. It's not too salty, with a clean taste that goes perfectly with *kalguksu*!
The combination of *kalguksu* and *donkatsu* at Kal-Don is great, but we added a small portion of *suyuk* (boiled pork) to get some extra protein.
It came out first, but we didn't panic! We just enjoyed it as an appetizer!
The *suyuk* wasn't a large portion, but it was just the right amount to have as a side dish. It was clean and didn't have any unpleasant smell, so it was perfect to eat with the *kalguksu* or *donkatsu*.
The seasoned radish that came with it was so delicious. *Suyuk* + seasoned radish + garlic = amazing! Makes me want to have some *makgeolli* (Korean rice wine)!
Next came the King *Donkatsu*! The *donkatsu* had crispy breading and thick meat!
The most impressive thing was the *donkatsu* sauce! It was more savory than regular *donkatsu* sauce and had a creamier feel. I can't really explain it well, but it was a delicious flavor that I felt I had eaten somewhere before!
I scraped up every last bit of sauce to enjoy it with the last piece of *donkatsu*!
My boyfriend always tries hard to cut the *donkatsu* for me, but he's a little clumsy. But it's okay. I hope you do it for me in the future!
But he cut it into good sized pieces with pretty even spacing! I think he is getting better and better.
The salad is also delicious. It's also tasty to put it on top of the *donkatsu*.
Finally, my favorite *kalguksu*! I wanted to try the regular Kal-Don *Kalguksu*, but I love perilla seed *kalguksu* so much that I ended up ordering it. Sorry, but I already knew what I wanted.
It was full of perilla seeds, so it was so savory! My choice was right! And my boyfriend ate even more than I did.^^
Perilla seed *kalguksu* with kimchi is the best combination. It's so delicious. The colors match perfectly too!
The noodles were so chewy and bouncy, thanks to the freshly made noodles, which had a great texture. After eating, my stomach felt comfortable and not at all heavy!
I almost forgot to take a video of everything.
*Kalguksu* + *Donkatsu* + *Suyuk* = The perfect combination! ❤️
Oh my goodness! Kal-Don, the boss is so kind that he even prepared some after-meal drinks.
Not only coffee ☕, but also *omija* (magnolia berry) and *bokbunja* (Korean black raspberry) drinks! And peppermint tea is also free?! (Peppermint tea is my absolute favorite!) I love it so much! The service here is amazing!
I got an iced peppermint tea and my boyfriend got an iced *omija* tea.
They even take care of after-meal drinks! So sweet!
If you're looking for a hearty meal near Jungma-dong, I highly recommend 'Kal-Don,' a restaurant with long lines. It's a great combination that is not too heavy but also clean and satisfying.
Definitely want to visit again! 100%
