Aewol Namdo Hansang: A Jeju Foodie's Honest Review of This Popular Table d'Hôte

Driven by curiosity sparked by Jeju Island food YouTubers and receipt reviews, I visited Aewol Namdo Hansang.
The restaurant offers a neat and tidy table setting with a diverse array of side dishes, including boiled pork slices (suyuk), fermented skate (hongeo), and grilled fish. It aims to be a friendly Aewol culinary experience.
Here's my honest, subjective review.
Jeju 맛집과 카페, 당신의 시간을 아끼는 리뷰
Location and Parking
Open from 11 AM to 3 PM, this Aewol restaurant operates for only 4 hours a day.
Despite arriving at 11:29 AM, the parking area in front of the restaurant was already full. Luckily, I managed to find a spot in an empty lot nearby.
Waiting Time
Even arriving before opening, there was already a wait. I added my name and the number of people in my party to the waiting list.
Since the customers ahead of us were already being seated, I estimated that the wait wouldn't be too long.
The wait wasn't long as a customer who had come for the opening left shortly after.
Inside the Restaurant
Food is constantly being prepared in the open kitchen.
The set menu is served on a large tray.
Namdo Hansang has 8 tables, accommodating 8 teams simultaneously.
The restroom is conveniently located inside the restaurant.
They even have baby chairs, making it a good option for families traveling in Jeju.
Menu
The menu consists of a single set option: the "Namdo Hansang."
Available for orders of 2 or more, the Namdo Hansang costs ₩16,000 per person. Children's portion is ₩10,000 and toddlers' is ₩5,000.
The labeling of the chili powder origin is ambiguous. It should be clearly indicated whether it's domestically produced or imported. The current notation of "Domestic (Imported)" can be confusing for consumers.
The Food
I put my name on the waiting list at 11:29 AM and received my table d'hote (hansang) at 11:50 AM.
While the staff at Aewol Namdo Hansang were friendly, they seemed short-handed.
They offered to replenish any lacking side dishes, but with only one person working the dining area, it felt awkward to constantly ask for more.
Friendly service, but not entirely satisfactory.
Overall, the food leaned towards a sweet and salty profile.
While not spicy, the emphasis on sweet and salty flavors seemed to be characteristic of "Namdo style" cuisine.
The 19 side dishes were neatly presented in brassware.
Kimchi, braised potatoes, chives, doraji, fish chips, pickled peppers, salted pollack roe, fern, zucchini, spicy pork, zucchini squash, braised lotus roots, fermented anchovy sauce, gochujang sauce, braised burdock roots, dried pollack salad, aster scaber, skate, and radish salad.
The only dish that truly conveyed the essence of Namdo was the fermented skate (hongeo).
The set also included a pumpkin pancake, boiled pork slices (suyuk), and grilled fish, served with rice and seaweed soup.
The thickly sliced pumpkin pancake was sweet and delicious.
The spicy pork had a sweet and salty flavor, lacking spiciness. It had a noticeable porky odor and the meat was chopped too finely, making it difficult to appreciate the texture. It tasted like something mass-produced in a cafeteria.
Only 5 pieces of fermented skate were served. As a first-timer, I could only manage one piece. My husband, an experienced eater, found it decent.
The fish, whose name I couldn't identify, was small in size but firm and meaty. It was grilled to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
The side dish, which I presume to be dried pollack, was sweet and salty, as if soaked in corn syrup.
The lotus root, with its chewy texture, was also sweet.
The meal also included rice mixed with millet and seaweed soup.
If you enjoy sweet and salty flavors, this place will surely be to your taste, despite the lack of spicy flavours.
If you're craving Korean food during your Jeju trip, Aewol Namdo Hansang, with its variety of side dishes, fish, and meat served neatly in brassware, might be a good option.
The side dish, suspected to be dried fish chips, was sweet, salty, and perfect as a beer snack.
Chives seasoned with soybean paste, fern, salty salted pollack roe, sweet and salty braised potatoes, and pickled peppers made for excellent side dishes that complemented the rice perfectly.
Six thinly sliced pieces of boiled pork slices (suyuk) were served. While the suyuk and grilled fish were the protein sources, the small portion sizes left me feeling like I hadn't had enough protein.
I made a samhap (three-layered delicacy) with suyuk, skate, and fresh kimchi.
This Aewol restaurant was highly praised by Jeju food YouTubers and in receipt reviews.
While the staff were friendly, they seemed understaffed. The food wasn't bad, but the sweet and salty flavors were not to our taste.
We probably won't visit again. However, if you enjoy a variety of side dishes and a neatly presented table d'hote at an affordable price, this place might appeal to you.
