A Must-Visit Black Pork Restaurant in Aewol, Jeju

On the last day of my trip to Jeju, the owner of my accommodation subtly recommended a place. "I visited this black pork restaurant in Aewol, and it was amazing," they said, sparking my curiosity.
The restaurant I visited was Ddungttanji Aewol, located at 17 Buryeongsu-gil, Aewol-eup, Jeju.
Operating hours are daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with the last order at 9:30 PM.
As soon as I entered, I noticed a certification mark on the entrance, indicating it was a formally certified establishment, which added to my trust.
Upon entering, I was greeted by a large aging room right in front. Through the glass, I could see the neatly stored meats, showing that temperature and humidity were meticulously managed.
Although the indoor seating was nice, the sunny weather led me to choose an outdoor terrace. After placing my order, the table was soon filled with an abundance of dishes, raising my expectations.
Underneath the grill, charcoal was blazing, filling the air with its unique aroma. The difference of grilling over charcoal rather than gas was evident.
When the main dish, the pork belly and neck, was served, I could see the juices slightly seeping out, indicating freshness.
There were six different sauces on the table, including salt, ssamjang, wasabi, soybean powder, and garlic, which made the meal even more enjoyable.
As for the side dishes, a plate of soy sauce marinated crab caught my eye, along with a vibrant red marinated crab that looked enticing.
All the side dishes were beautifully presented, filled with local vegetables, and a unique scallion salad with plenty of bean sprouts stood out for its refreshing crunch.
Finally, it was time for grilling. As I placed the lean pork on the grill, the sizzling sound was music to my ears.
As the surface changed color from the heat, the aroma of the sizzling fat filled the air, whetting my appetite.
The cool breeze from the terrace added to the ambiance, making the meal feel special under the warm sunlight.
The staff expertly handled the grilling, adjusting the heat and timing perfectly, allowing me to relax and enjoy.
On the table, a small bowl of maeljeot, a local sauce made from fermented anchovy sauce and chili, was presented. It was described as spicy yet savory, enhancing the overall flavor.
When I took my first bite of the perfectly grilled pork, its tenderness enveloped my tongue, and the rich juices burst forth, filling my mouth with flavor.
I paired it with a little wasabi, which balanced the richness nicely, creating an unexpected yet delightful combination.
A bubbling kimchi stew arrived at the table, its spicy aroma inviting me to take a spoonful of rice soaked in the warm broth, which felt comforting.
Dipping the grilled meat in the maeljeot sauce intensified the flavor, creating a unique taste experience.
To wrap up the meal, cold noodles were served, perfectly refreshing after the hearty dishes.
Now I understood why the owner highly recommended this black pork restaurant. With high-quality ingredients and friendly service, it was a satisfying dining experience. Choosing to dine here on my last day in Jeju was indeed an excellent decision.
