A few days ago, after visiting Hwadam Botanic Garden with my family, we headed to our favorite restaurant, a well-known gem in Gyeonggi Gwangju.

This place is spacious and pleasant, perfect for family outings or group gatherings. We thoroughly enjoyed the charcoal grilled chicken with its smoky aroma, and I wanted to share our experience.

We visited Taehwasanmyeongga Gonjiam Main Branch, located within a 15-minute drive from Hwadam Botanic Garden.

Situated along the main road, the tall building is easy to spot even for first-timers. The ample parking space right in front of the restaurant makes visiting hassle-free. I went during weekday lunch, but I heard it can get crowded in the evening, so you might have to wait.

As soon as we entered, we noticed many celebrity signatures on the wall. I thought my family and I had been to most of the famous restaurants nationwide, but this was the first time I'd seen so many signatures in one place!

The interior of the Gyeonggi Gwangju restaurant mainly consists of 4 or 6-seater tables, which seemed ideal for families or group gatherings like ours.

There was also a clean self-service corner, constantly monitored by the staff.

At this restaurant, we ordered charcoal grilled chicken, makguksu (buckwheat noodles), and buckwheat crepes. I ordered both marinated and salt-grilled chicken, thinking the kids would like it, while my wife and I ordered makguksu and buckwheat crepes separately.

The side dishes were initially served as a set, and we could refill them ourselves afterward. The quality of the side dishes was excellent, befitting a renowned restaurant in Gyeonggi Gwangju.

I was particularly impressed with the dongchimi (radish water kimchi). It instantly soothed my upset stomach from the previous night. I almost asked the staff how they made it so refreshing, but I refrained.

Let me start with the buckwheat crepes. My wife loves them, so we ordered them, and they were surprisingly delicious.

Unlike those sold in regular markets, these felt chewier. The staff recommended dipping them in the sauce provided, which definitely enhanced the flavor.

The charcoal grilled chicken was a big hit with my kids. It was served in large pieces, four to a plate.

Interestingly, my older child preferred the marinated chicken, while the younger one liked the salt-grilled version better. Seeing both of them satisfied allowed my wife and me to enjoy a relaxed meal for the first time in a while.

When I tried to grill the chicken myself, the owner came over and offered to do it for us. He immediately placed the charcoal on the grill and started grilling the thicker parts of the chicken first.

Later, I learned that grilling the meatier parts first helps prevent it from burning.

Since the chicken is pre-cooked, it didn't take long to grill, which is probably why my kids loved it so much.

I enjoyed it with the salt provided, and the smoky aroma was fantastic. Surprisingly, the smoky flavor was subtle, without any unpleasant odors, making it even more delicious.

The marinade also seemed homemade and complemented the chicken perfectly. My wife and I enjoyed it so much that we refilled it several times from the self-service corner.

It was also great with the side dishes. Chicken can be greasy and have a strong flavor, but this wasn't the case here.

I was worried that the marinated chicken might be too spicy for my child, but they were able to adjust the spiciness level, which was great.

Initially, I didn't have high expectations for the chicken, but they cooked it exceptionally well.

The chicken was perfectly marinated and infused with the right amount of smoky flavor, making every bite a delight. It paired especially well with the onion slices.

I also enjoyed the marinated chicken with the side dishes, and it tasted savory without being greasy. I understood why everyone kept going back to the self-service corner.

The owner grilled the chicken perfectly, and wrapping it in lettuce made for a satisfying meal.

Inside the restaurant, there was a sign stating that they use whole buckwheat flour for their makguksu, which made me look forward to it even more.

As the sign mentioned, the sauce had a perfect balance of sourness and sweetness. The buckwheat flavor was prominent with every bite. I tried adding sugar as the owner suggested, and it tasted even better.

I enjoyed it with the leftover chicken, and the combination of chewy noodles and chicken was a real treat.

If you're planning a trip to Gonjiam Resort or a nearby valley, I highly recommend visiting Taehwasanmyeongga. The carefully prepared meal, free of MSG, will surely satisfy the whole family.
