A Delicious and Memorable Meal at Gukdong Kalguksu in Yeosu

Are you all just waiting for the day you can finally travel somewhere?
I recently visited Yeosu, South Korea.
There are so many great restaurants, but I want to share a memorable place that's great for breakfast and popular with locals.
I'd like to leave a review of Gukdong Kalguksu, a great place to have Yeosu-style hangover soup.
Easy Waiting with Tabling
These days, it's tough to wait if a place doesn't use Tabling (a reservation app). Luckily, this place does!
Thanks to Tabling, I was able to put my name down and wait comfortably.
Since it's a famous restaurant, some waiting is inevitable.
Since it's a kalguksu (noodle soup) restaurant, many people order kalguksu.
So, we ordered kalguksu, but it's unique because you can also eat it like a rice soup.
Those looking for Yeosu-style hangover soup will find this a great place to cure their hangovers.
Baby chairs are available, so many families come here.
Yeosu is a popular domestic travel destination for families, so it's great that they have baby chairs.
There's a self-service corner where you can get more side dishes.
Self-service corners can get dirty quickly because many people use them.
But every time I went back and forth while eating, I noticed it was kept clean, so the staff must pay attention to it.
Thanks to that, I was able to enjoy Yeosu mustard leaf kimchi and pickled radish without worry.
You can order directly from a tablet at the table, so there's no need for unnecessary communication like organizing your order in advance or calling the staff.
These small details can change my criteria for choosing a restaurant.
Personally, I like that the system of having to constantly call the staff is changing.
Yeosu Viewpoint Through the Glass Windows
I came to eat Yeosu-style hangover soup, but I was also impressed by the view.
You can see the clear sky and the ocean through the large windows.
Of course, it's partially blocked by buildings, but I think it's a great view to enjoy while eating.
The interior is kept clean and comfortable, so it's a great place to eat.
While waiting for our order, I noticed many people were ordering gimbap (seaweed rice rolls) to go.
So, we added gimbap to our order as well.
Here's what we ordered: Kalguksu, barley yukjeon bibimbap (mixed rice with fried beef), and two rolls of gimbap.
Kalguksu: ₩10,000
Barley Yukjeon Bibimbap: ₩10,000
Yukjeon Gimbap: ₩5,500
Tuna Gimbap: ₩4,500
You can have a great, affordable meal like this!
The kalguksu looks like it has plenty of toppings.
I wonder what it will taste like.
There seems to be enough yukjeon, so it won't be lacking when eating it with the noodles.
I ordered kalguksu as my Yeosu-style hangover soup, and my wife ordered bibimbap.
She had to have rice in the morning, but the portion was quite large.
The vegetables were colorful and pretty, and the visuals were so good that I had to take lots of pictures.
The gimbap is about 1.5 times larger than other typical restaurants.
It's so thick that if you're not a big eater, you might get full just from eating the gimbap.
Looking at the plump gimbap, it looks kind of cute.
I guess I'm still not fully awake from last night.
I need to eat Yeosu-style hangover soup and get rid of this hangover.
Deep and Rich Flavor is a Masterpiece
You can tell from the color of the kalguksu broth that it has a deep flavor.
I was going to order kalgukbap (kalguksu with rice), but since it's a kalguksu restaurant and the instructions said to add barley rice to it, I ordered kalguksu.
In conclusion, it was a good choice!
The combination with mustard leaf kimchi was so good that I kept refilling the Yeosu mustard leaf kimchi while eating the noodles.
The noodles were well-seasoned with the broth and not too salty, so it was easy to eat for breakfast.
The mustard leaf kimchi goes so well with it that I kept putting the noodles on my spoon first and then adding the mustard leaf kimchi on top.
I could feel my hangover gradually disappearing, and it was a hearty meal.
As expected, there were plenty of meat toppings and yukjeon, so I could enjoy them until I finished all the noodles!
Sometimes, meat toppings are just for show.
But here, they added plenty for the flavor, so you can really taste the meat.
The reason I didn't order rice soup!
It's because I have to add barley rice after I finish the noodles.
It's a dish that can fully cure your hangover with Yeosu-style hangover soup.
The rice isn't white rice, but barley rice, so the texture is fun.
As expected, it's a fail-proof combination when you eat it with mustard leaf kimchi.
If I lived in Yeosu, I would come here often, but it's a shame that I can only visit when I travel here.
Even after finishing my trip, I keep thinking about this place.
Texture is a Gangster, Yukjeon Bibimbap
The yukjeon bibimbap also has barley rice as the base, so the texture is really great.
The texture of the barley rice and the fresh vegetables make it a great combination.
The gochujang (red pepper paste) is made with a special sauce, so it tastes completely different from store-bought gochujang.
It's not too salty and moderately seasoned, and it's made with burdock root, so it has a special and addictive flavor.
It's good to eat without mustard leaf kimchi, but the combination with mustard leaf kimchi is also so good that I recommend it.
I visited this place to eat Yeosu-style hangover soup, but since many people were ordering and taking out gimbap, I added it to my order as well!
As expected, you can see that it's full of ingredients.
I wondered how they rolled it with so much filling.
The tuna gimbap is the same.
It's so full of ingredients that I can see why so many people order it to go.
Next time, I might order it to go and eat it by the beach.
While traveling with my wife, I've been to many great restaurants and many hangover soup restaurants to cure my hangovers.
But this place, with its Yeosu-style hangover soup, will be remembered for a long time as a great place for a meal.
There's a reason why locals frequent this place, and it's a restaurant that makes me realize that again.
