Yaongyi, Webtoon Artist, Reflects on Tax Evasion and Regrets Not Investing in NVIDIA

Webtoon artist Yaongyi has broken her long silence and shared her recent activities. Despite the controversies, she has been calmly reflecting on herself and conveying her sincere feelings to her fans with a stronger voice.
"My ignorance was the biggest mistake," she stated.
On the 20th, Yaongyi held a 'Ask Me Anything' session with her fans through her social media. Even in the short Q&A, the weight of the past could be felt. When a fan left a message saying, "I'm glad that the unfair things have been resolved. I support you," she warmly responded with a photo of baby chicks.
The small creatures in the photo had a yellow glow. As if symbolizing a new beginning, Yaongyi's response was quiet but meaningful. She added, "My ignorance was the biggest mistake. I will study more, seek advice from experts, and work harder," conveying her sincere resolution.
"I didn't know back then, it was my first time earning money," Yaongyi confessed.
On this day, she also revealed a photo looking back on the past. Underneath a photo of herself wearing Chanel, she wrote, "I regret buying luxury goods when it was my first time earning money. I should have bought NVIDIA stocks with that money. I wasted it all." Although it was a short sentence, it contained both painful self-reproach and laughter-filled reflection.
Once regarded as a symbol of a glamorous life as a 'successful webtoon artist,' Yaongyi now speaks with the voice of an adult who knows reality and responsibility.
"The weight of law and responsibility I didn't know back then."
Yaongyi was embroiled in tax evasion allegations in February of last year. At the time, she explained, "The National Tax Service conducted a tax audit on my sole proprietorship on November 16, 2022, and I cooperated diligently with the investigation."
As a result of the investigation, it was acknowledged that there was no private use of the corporate card or vehicle, but taxes were imposed on some items. Regarding this, she directly bowed her head, saying, "It is my responsibility, a mistake caused by my carelessness."
She also stated that she is "actively clarifying with the help of a professional accountant" regarding the issue of value-added tax related to the publishing and webtoon industries, conveying that she is following a transparent procedure. Her explanation was closer to 'reflection' than excuse. She acknowledged her past mistakes and held herself responsible for not understanding the law and system.
Daily life after the controversy has changed.
Recently, her social media shows more of her simple daily life than glamorous images. Photos of taking care of chicks, a desk under warm lighting, and moments of quietly drinking tea. Instead of flashy influencer-style posts, there is a message that 'this is enough as it is now.'
Fans are sending messages of support, saying, "I feel your sincerity," and "It's good to see you stronger now." She calmly replied to the fans' words, "I'm going to take it slow now. I won't forget my mistakes and will live while learning."
"I want to draw again, sincerely."
Yaongyi is a star artist who gained great popularity with the Naver webtoon 'True Beauty'. She has created numerous fans with her splendid drawing style and sensual story.
However, at some point in her life, she chose 'authenticity' over glamour. She held a wedding with webtoon artist Jeon Seon-wook (author of 'Freaking Romance'), whom she was in a public relationship with, last year, announcing another new beginning.
Previously, as a single mom raising her son alone after a divorce, she spent fierce time juggling work and childcare. Now, she is living "for myself, for my family, and for the readers I will draw for again."
"I will study, learn, and improve."
What is felt in each short sentence on social media is 'the language of a person starting again.' She was putting down glamorous modifiers and refining herself with humility and learning. "My ignorance was my fault." That one word sounded like a self-reproach and a promise for the future.
Yaongyi's sincere message ultimately boils down to one thing: the courage to admit mistakes, learn, and move forward—that may be a more beautiful narrative than 'True Beauty' itself.
