My Trip to Japan with Friends
1 Chome Minamiikebukuro, Toshima City, Tokyo, Japan
이케부쿠로역

Earlier this year, I embarked on a long-awaited trip to Japan with my closest "otaku" friends. It was a journey filled with hilarious mishaps, from unexpected stomach issues at the airport to accidentally leaving iPads behind, but every moment was an unforgettable part of our adventure. After a family trip to see the winter sea in Jeju, transitioning to the bustling streets of Tokyo felt like entering a completely different world.
This trip was a deep dive into Japanese subculture, centering around the "holy land" of Ikebukuro and the magical atmosphere of DisneySea. Despite the freezing Tokyo winter and a few health hiccups, traveling with friends who share the same passions made this one-year-overdue review finally come to life with many interesting stories to tell.
Arrival in Tokyo and Local Life in Ikebukuro (이케부쿠로)
Our journey began with a beautiful train ride from Otsuya Station directly to our cozy Airbnb near Ikebukuro. We truly felt like locals in the quiet neighborhood, and our kind host even stocked the fridge with orange juice. After a long day of travel and a quick pharmacy run for some very effective Japanese medicine, we headed out for our first dinner at Kurazushi in Ikebukuro.
Ikebukuro is famous as the holy land for female otakus, and we were excited to be in the heart of it. Although the wait for sushi was long and my stomach was still a bit sensitive, finally tasting fresh sushi in Japan felt like the official start of our vacation. We spent the evening lounging and preparing for the busy days ahead.
Kimonos in Asakusa and DisneySea Magic
On the second day, we visited Asakusa for a traditional kimono experience. The staff at the shop were lovely, and we even bonded over our love for anime while they did our hair. Walking around the historic Sensō-ji area in our kimonos made us feel like characters in an anime, and it was quite funny when tourists mistook us for Japanese locals!
The third day was all about DisneySea. Despite the heavy rain and a grueling four-hour wait for the Tower of Terror, the quality of the park was on a whole different level compared to Lotte World. I had a bit of a "bathroom emergency" right before boarding, but I persevered and enjoyed the ride before making a mad dash to the restroom!
Harry Potter Studios and the Freezing Streets of Shibuya
The Harry Potter Studio was an unexpected highlight, featuring magic shows, butterbeer, and inspiring storyboards. Afterward, we explored the vibrant nightlife of Kabukicho and the famous Shibuya Scramble. However, we completely underestimated the Tokyo winter. We were freezing in our skirts and off-shoulder tops—it felt like -70 degrees! We snapped a few quick photos and retreated to the warmth of the indoors.
Final Pilgrimage and a Chaotic Departure
On our last day, we did one final sweep of the Animate flagship store in Ikebukuro. Seeing characters from our favorite genres made for the perfect ending. However, the chaos returned as we headed to Narita Airport. Between security flagging my toner and my friend accidentally leaving her iPad behind in the rush, we were a mess! Even at Incheon Airport, we almost forgot our duty-free bags on the plane.
Thankfully, the flight attendants were incredibly helpful, and we made it home safely with all our belongings. Though we are a group that tends to be a bit forgetful, these mishaps just added to the charm of our trip. I returned home already missing the local Japanese vibes but desperately craving a bowl of spicy Korean kimchi.
