Exploring Gokbongsan: A Scenic Hiking Adventure

Hello!
Recently, we have been experiencing cooler summer weather than usual.
I visited Gokbongsan, a representative mountain of Goyang City, which is perfect for a light hike.
Let's start with some stories about Gokbongsan and my hiking experience.
Gokbongsan is located at the boundary of Ilsan 2-dong and Gokbong-dong in Ilsan, with an elevation of 208.6 meters, making it the highest mountain in Ilsan.
(For reference: Jeongbalsan is 88 meters high.)
As the highest mountain in Ilsan, Gokbongsan hosts a sunrise event every January 1st.
The name 'Gokbongsan' means 'high mountain peak' or 'to light a beacon.'
There are temples like Mangyeongsa and Yeongcheonsa around the summit.
On Buddha's birthday, many people flock to Gokbongsan!
From the summit, you can enjoy views of the west towards Gimpo's Munsusan and Paju's Simhak Mountain, and to the east, you can see Bukhansan and Deogyang-gu.
Now, let me share some parking information for Gokbongsan.
You can use the Jungsan 3rd Public Parking Lot (free) located at 1726 Jungsan-dong, Ilsan-dong-gu, Goyang City for easy access to the hiking trail.
Keep in mind that the public parking lot can be limited on weekends due to the influx of hikers.
To reach the Gokbongsan trailhead, cross the intersection of 'Sogaeul 1-gil and Hanul Village.'
Be cautious as the traffic lights do not operate at this intersection.
As you ascend the stairs, you'll come to a fork in the path; take the right direction to continue your hike up Gokbongsan.
The mountain is densely covered with pine, zelkova, oak, and chestnut trees, providing ample shade and making it relatively comfortable to hike even in summer.
Fortunately, the humidity is still low, so just being under the shade feels refreshing.
Starting from Jungsan 3rd Public Parking Lot, if you take your time, you'll reach the Gokbongsan Observatory in about an hour.
Gokbongsan is a 'dirt mountain' with very few rocks, so it's easy to hike in sneakers without special hiking boots.
As you approach the summit, you'll start seeing the 'communication tower.'
Even though this summer is cooler than usual, beads of sweat will form on your forehead, and before you know it, your back will be soaked.
As the heatwave approaches, outdoor activities may become challenging.
So, why not pack light clothing, a bottle of water, and some snacks, and head out to Gokbongsan?
It's a mountain that everyone can easily climb, offering not just exercise but also a sense of achievement and stunning views.
Thank you!
