Exhibition Overview
The title "Promise (Where Beings Be)" reflects the concept of mutual coexistence, as expressed by the artist, reminding us of the interconnectedness of nature that transcends language and civilization.
This exhibition is divided into subthemes: 'Lucy', 'Warning Bell', 'Microcosm', 'Dawn', and 'Natural State', along with an archive of the artist's major works. It prompts reflection on the long history shared by humanity and nature, revealing the responsibility we bear for the destruction of life and the environment.
Choi Eun-joo, the director of the Seoul Museum of Art, stated, "This exhibition offers a space for rethinking the relationship between nature, life, humans, and the environment, emphasizing the need for action."
Artist Introduction
Choi Jae-eun is a representative contemporary artist who explores the relationship between life and nature through various media, including sculpture, video, installation, and architecture.
Journey to the Exhibition
Located beside the Deoksugung Stonewall Path, the Seoul Museum of Art is as beautiful as a European museum.
Inside the Exhibition
The exhibition is composed of six spaces.
Lucy
This artwork symbolizes the origin of humanity, inspired by fossils from approximately 3.2 million years ago. It is crafted from hexagonal pieces of alabaster, representing the pelvic bone of Lucy.
Warning Bell
This video work visualizes the realities of climate crisis and ecological destruction through real-time sea surface temperature data combined with ocean imagery.
Microcosm
This section expands the view to the micro-world existing inside and outside the earth, showcasing traditional Japanese paper and other interactive elements.
Dawn
Here, you can see over 560 collected wildflowers and weeds that the artist encountered in daily life.
Natural State
This space reconsiders the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) as a natural realm rather than a human-divided boundary.
Archive
The final space is an archive summarizing the evolution of the artist's work, including models of major projects and various documentation.
One-Line Review
A free exhibition of this quality is a steal!
Especially in the Dawn space, I was amazed by the vastness and beauty of the wildflowers.
This is my favorite space!
