Visiting the Shrine of Independence Activist Lee Sang-seol

Hello. The Shrine of Sungnyeolsa houses the spirit tablet of independence activist Lee Sang-seol. As you pass through the Hongsalmun gate, the path leading to the shrine features a statue, a memorial stone, and a tribute stone, allowing visitors to reflect on the life of Lee Sang-seol and the history of the independence movement.
Located in Sancheok-ri, Jincheon-eup, Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, the shrine provides a deeper understanding of Lee Sang-seol's life and the significance of his era when combined with a visit to the Bojae Lee Sang-seol Memorial Hall and his birthplace.
After passing through the Hongsalmun gate, you will see the shrine, with the surrounding area featuring a statue of Lee Sang-seol, a memorial stone, and a tribute stone. The memorial stone was erected in 1957 to honor Lee Sang-seol, who dedicated his life to the independence of his country but unfortunately did not live to see its liberation, dying in a foreign land. The stone, designed in a simple style without a headstone, is inscribed with 'Bojae Lee Sang-seol Memorial Stone,' solemnly conveying his intentions and achievements.
Lee Sang-seol is a prominent figure often mentioned in modern history books. In 1907, he was dispatched as a delegate to the Hague Peace Conference to inform the international community of the unjust situation of the Korean Empire, dedicating his life to the cause of independence.
The tribute stone is housed within a protective pavilion and features a grand design with a turtle base and a stone tablet topped with two dragons in conflict. The life story of Lee Sang-seol is inscribed in Korean on the tribute stone, allowing visitors to reflect on his life and contributions to the independence movement.
The shrine is a wooden structure with a tiled roof, measuring three bays in the front and two and a half on the sides, dedicated to the spirit tablet of Lee Sang-seol. Its modest yet solemn architectural style captures the significance of the space well.
In 1997, the shrine was relocated to its current site during the restoration of Lee Sang-seol's birthplace, serving as a place that naturally evokes his spirit and ideals.
There is also an exhibition hall that appears to have been used before the establishment of the Lee Sang-seol Memorial Hall. Although indoor viewing was not possible during my visit, those interested in learning more about Lee Sang-seol should consider visiting the memorial hall.
Lee Sang-seol's birthplace is designated as a cultural heritage site in Chungcheongbuk-do, preserving the traditional thatched-roof house where he actually lived. The structure consists of a main house and a barn, allowing visitors to calmly observe the lifestyle of that time.
The shrine of Sungnyeolsa, housing the spirit tablet of independence activist Lee Sang-seol, is a place where the historical significance and resonance of the past are deeply conveyed. Through the path leading from the Hongsalmun gate to the shrine, visitors can naturally reflect on the life of Lee Sang-seol and the traces of the independence movement. Visiting the nearby Bojae Lee Sang-seol Memorial Hall and his birthplace further enriches the understanding of this figure's life and the historical pain of his era.
