Urban Regeneration and a New Resting Space
Victory Park(승리봉공원) in Dangjin is becoming a new relaxation space in the old city center, adding leisure to the daily lives of local residents.
Originally, this area was the site of the old Dangjin Fortress, which was once designated for new apartment construction.
However, after construction was halted, it was left unattended for several years, leading to urban decay and safety concerns.
To revitalize this space for urban regeneration and citizen relaxation, the city of Dangjin invested approximately 14 billion KRW, creating Victory Park, which spans about 25,009 square meters.
A Historical Park Connecting Past and Present
What sets Victory Park apart from typical neighborhood parks is its focus on preserving cultural heritage while invigorating the old city center as a historical park.
The area around the park, once a neglected ruin, is transforming in a way that connects history with nature.
The vicinity of the former Seomun-ri area, which was known as the 12th district of the town, has also been improved, significantly enhancing park accessibility and scenery.
The previously bleak landscape is now filled with greenery and walking paths, creating a new space where the old city meets nature.
Accessibility and Urban Connectivity
This transformation goes beyond mere environmental improvement; it provides residents with a place for rest and relaxation, marking a significant turning point for Victory Park as a representative park of the region.
The park is connected from four directions: near Seomun-ri, Dangjin Cathedral, Anshin Tower, and McDonald's, allowing easy access.
Victory Park is designed with an open structure based on its central location in Dangjin's old town, ensuring accessibility from multiple directions.
This multi-directional access demonstrates that Victory Park is not just for a specific neighborhood but serves as a central park for the entire old city of Dangjin.
Especially, walking routes seamlessly integrate into daily strolls, enhancing accessibility and usability.
Parking and Visitor Convenience
Currently, there are no official public parking facilities near the entrance from the direction of Dangjin Cathedral.
However, some vacant lots near the cathedral and entrance area may potentially be utilized as parking spaces in the future.
While formal signage and operational systems are not yet in place, it is expected that as park visitors increase, parking space expansion will follow suit.
This area is easily accessible on foot, making it suitable for visits to the cathedral or leisurely walks in the old town.
Historical Significance and Future Value
Victory Park, located adjacent to the old Dangjin fortress area, holds significant meaning as a space that transcends ordinary parks.
Its proximity to the historical center of administration and defense during the Joseon Dynasty allows visitors to feel the blend of ancient Dangjin's past with present daily life.
The park, built on this historical foundation, serves as a reinterpretation of a citizen space without erasing the past, reinforcing the value and identity of Dangjin's old town.
Though there are still some shortcomings in pathways and amenities, Victory Park is undeniably an attractive space.
The historical weight of its proximity to the fortress, along with the scenic views along the ridges, is one of the park's greatest advantages.
Once fully developed, the park will undoubtedly improve, but even now, it is worth visiting for its historical significance and scenery.
Victory Park is a meaningful space that shows both the present and the future of Dangjin.
