Sudoksa Temple, located in the tranquil winter landscape of Yesan, South Chungcheong Province, is a serene spot to visit even during the cold season. After the heavy snowfall, the weather has been crisp but pleasant, making it an ideal day for a visit. This temple is the head temple of the 7th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and oversees 36 branch temples in the region.
Sudoksa is situated halfway up Deoksung Mountain and is one of the five major temples in Korea. Upon entering the temple grounds from the parking area, visitors are greeted by restaurants lining both sides of the path. A short walk leads to a sign that reads 'Deoksung Temple, Sudoksa.' Inside, you can find the stupa of Monk Won-dam and the stupa hall.
Further along, on the right side, is the Sudoksa Museum, which opened in 1997. It was recently relocated to its current location after being established underground at Hwanghwa Jeongru.
The museum's name, 'Gunyuk Seongbo-gwan,' reflects the spirit of the national identity and cultural heritage, inspired by the 'World's One Flower' written by Master Mangong to commemorate the joy of liberation and world peace. The museum houses various artifacts, including the bronze bell from Buseoksa Temple, and displays many cultural heritages within its spacious exhibition hall.
To the left of the Iljumun Gate is the Sudoksa Art Museum, which opened in 2010 to promote Buddhist art. Currently, it features sketches by the artist Lee Ungno and hosts various exhibitions, offering cultural experiences to visitors.
Sudoksa also has Sudok Guesthouse, officially registered as the Lee Ungno Historic Site, recognized as a cultural property in South Chungcheong Province. This thatched-roof house was where Na Hye-sok, the first female artist in Korea, stayed. In 1944, Lee Ungno purchased the property and named it Sudok Guesthouse, where he lived while receiving guidance from Na Hye-sok.
Sudoksa is a historic temple founded during the Baekje period, making it a prominent tourist destination that attracts visitors year-round. The temple offers a temple stay program for those looking to immerse themselves in its serene atmosphere.
As you walk towards the Daeungjeon Hall, you will find the path leading to Hwanhui-dae, a hermitage established in 1926 where nuns live and meditate. The area is rich in history, with beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons, providing a peaceful retreat for all who visit.
Sudoksa Temple is beautiful throughout the year, from the cherry blossoms in spring to the lush greenery of summer, the vibrant autumn leaves, and the serene winter snow. A stroll around the temple grounds can lighten the spirit and bring tranquility.
