The Geochang World University Theater Festival

Dong-Ah Institute of Media and Arts

Playwright: Arthur Miller, Director: Oh Si-hyun

I've just seen "The Crucible" at the 21st Geochang World University Theater Festival!

Arthur Miller's masterpiece, "The Crucible," is based on the real witch trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692.

As the saying goes, "You should eat before climbing Mount Kumgang," I enjoyed a delicious dinner near Susungdae before heading to the performance venue.

"The Crucible" explores themes of collective madness and fear, the violence of power, and profound questions about human conscience.

Before the curtain rises, a bed is set on stage.

In a scene reminiscent of a night of frenzy, girls dance under red lights.

Written as a critique of McCarthyism, which shook American society at the time, "The Crucible" conveys timeless social messages through the historical event of witch hunts.

In a situation where truth is doubted and power takes precedence over justice, the town gradually descends into ruin.

The protagonist, John Proctor, struggles between his honor, conscience, and truth, ultimately making a choice to uphold his dignity as a human being.

"The Crucible" is not just a historical drama; it reflects issues of public trials, collective hatred, and the abuse of power that persist today.

I applaud the passion of the young university students and the efforts of the cast of over 20 performers, which must have required significant preparation.

However, since the festival theater is an outdoor venue, the sound quality made it difficult to hear the actors' voices, and the lengthy duration posed challenges for maintaining concentration.

Having seen a traditional play after a long time, I believe this experience will stay with me for a while. I hope the dialogue can be more concise and that there are moments of humor to evoke laughter.

Great job to all the actors and staff! I hope Geochang leaves a positive impression.

Please show your interest in the high-quality performances at the Geochang World University Theater Festival!
