Supporting Young Fishermen in Shinan

A sea where the dreams of young fishermen grow,
Shinan County stands with you.
On January 30, Shinan County signed a
Memorandum of Understanding to support
the establishment of young fishermen in the aquaculture industry.
This initiative aims to systematically utilize
idle water surfaces and expand participation
opportunities for young fishermen, returning fishermen,
and graduates of Shinan Marine Science High School.
The signing ceremony was attended by
the acting mayor of Shinan County,
the principal of Shinan Marine Science High School,
the head of the Shinan Fishing Cooperative,
and representatives from Shinan Cheonsa Kim Co.,
who gathered to support the stable settlement
of young fishermen.
As K-Food continues to gain attention,
the seaweed industry is preparing for its future.
However, the reality of climate change
poses challenges such as deteriorating conditions
for seaweed farming and reduced production.
In response, Shinan County is establishing
a new foundation for seaweed farming
by utilizing idle water surfaces.
The county aims to build a four-party cooperation system
that fosters growth among existing fishermen,
young fishermen, and returning fishermen
to actively respond to the population decline.
Key collaboration details include:
✔️ Securing 760 hectares of new seaweed farming area
as per the 2026 licensing development plan.
✔️ Creating a desirable fishing village environment
to support the settlement of new young fishermen.
✔️ Providing mentoring and aquaculture technology transfer
in collaboration with existing fishermen.
✔️ Strengthening practical training and education
for students at Shinan Marine Science High School.
✔️ Addressing income instability in the initial settlement phase
by promoting contract purchases and securing stable sales channels.
Additionally, Shinan County has been selected as the
first in the nation for the first phase of the seaweed industry promotion zone
and is set to produce eco-friendly seaweed
that meets international quality standards by 2025.
With designated export zones and focused management,
exports to major countries such as the USA, China,
and Thailand have seen a remarkable increase of
approximately 380% over the past three years.
