As I stroll through the reed fields of Shinsung-ri, I reflect on the past year.

Located at 22-50 Shinsung-ri, Hansan-myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, the Shinsung-ri reed fields are a vast expanse where the Geum River meets the West Sea, recognized as one of the four major reed fields in South Korea.

Other famous reed fields include Suncheon Bay in Jeollanam-do, Gocheonamho in Haenam, and Sihwa Lake in Ansan.

The reed fields stretch 1.5 km long and 200 m wide, creating a breathtaking scene of golden waves.

Most of the area is a protected zone, with only about 2-3% open to the public as a reed park featuring a 2 km walking path.

Since the completion of the Geum River estuary dam in 1990, a freshwater lake has formed, attracting migratory birds like swans and teal during the winter months.

On a large rock, the phrase 'The Breath of the Geum River, The Feast of the Reeds' is inscribed.

I find myself visiting at least once in summer and winter, as the lush green reeds of summer and the golden reeds reflecting light in winter each offer their own unique charm.

The Shinsung-ri reed fields are considered one of the eight scenic spots of the Geum River. Curiously, the eight scenic spots stretch approximately 110 km from the confluence of the Miho River in Yeongi-gun to the Geum River estuary in Seocheon-gun.

The first scenic spot is the migratory bird habitat at the Geum River estuary dam, while the third spot includes Oknyubong and Palkwaejung, a pavilion noted for its ornate eight-sided roof.

I have visited Oknyubong, but I would love to see Palkwaejung someday.

Other cultural heritage sites in Buyeo include Nakhoaram, Busosan Fortress, and Goran Temple, which are the fourth scenic spot. The fifth is the Baekje River and Wangjin Ferry, while the sixth is Wungjin, home to the tomb of King Muryeong and the Songshanri ancient tombs. The seventh is the Sejong Dam in Sejong City, and the eighth scenic spot is Hapgangjeong, where the Geum River meets the Miho River.

This is a tribute to the local calligrapher and seal engraver, Master Jo Seong-joo from Seocheon, who composed the 'Shinsung-ri Reed Field Song'. In 1997, he showcased a seal engraving of the entire Diamond Sutra, earning a place in the Korean Guinness Book of Records.

The song monument was erected because he personally sang for local promotion, and he also carved the seal.

A boat can be seen among the willow trees, likely a yellow sailboat, showcasing a beautiful view amidst the reeds.

The walking path allows visitors to hear the sounds of the wind and reeds as they stroll.

From a distance, the Gunsan area feels close, and the scent of the sea and autumn purifies the heart.

The reeds and silver grass coexist beautifully here, with ample space for visitors to walk and experience the reeds up close.

Many films, including 'I'm Sorry, I Love You', 'Chuno', and Netflix's 'Kingdom' and 'Giant', have been shot here, bringing to mind thrilling chase and fight scenes.

In the evening, the sunset shines brightly, creating a stunning backdrop at the Shinsung-ri reed fields.

There is detailed information available about the Shinsung-ri reed fields, which were historically known as the Gomae (Ungpo) ferry crossing and the site of the Jinpo naval battle, where gunpowder was first used to defeat Japanese pirates at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty.

The Jinpo naval battle is known as the world's first naval artillery battle, where the weapon developed by Choi Mu-seon sank over 500 Japanese ships.

The observation deck provides a refreshing view and a cool breeze that is enough to blow away the stresses of daily life.

As I head home, the sunset is also beautiful.

There are snacks like roasted chestnuts and peanuts available, making it a cozy spot to warm up with a cup of tea.

This is the picturesque Shinsung-ri reed field, where the sounds of the reeds and the beauty of the sunset come together.
