Shinan County Takes Charge of National Subsidized Sea Routes

Shinan County becomes the first in the nation to directly operate national subsidized sea routes.
Connecting islands by sea, now under public responsibility.
Shinan County has become the first local government in South Korea to directly operate national subsidized sea routes.
This is a significant milestone as it marks the first time a local government has taken responsibility for routes previously managed by private shipping companies.
On the 22nd, Shinan County was selected as the top candidate in the final evaluation for the '6th National Subsidized Sea Route Operator Selection' conducted by the Mokpo Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office.
As a result, Shinan County will operate four national subsidized sea routes from 2026 to 2028.
What are national subsidized sea routes?
National subsidized sea routes are routes that are difficult for private shipping companies to operate due to low profitability.
Therefore, the government provides operational support to help maintain essential transportation for island residents.
Currently, there are 29 routes operating nationwide, and Shinan County is the first local government to take on this role directly.
The four routes that Shinan County will manage include:
✔️ Mokpo to Uido
✔️ Ungok to Shindo
✔️ Bukgang to Banwol
✔️ Jinri to Jaewon
These routes will be managed directly by Shinan County starting in 2026, with plans to enhance safety and service quality.
Improvements for crew members and residents are on the way.
Shinan County plans to address previous concerns one by one.
In particular, crew members working on national subsidized routes have faced fatigue due to having to manage accommodations on the ship.
Going forward, single-occupancy accommodations will be provided at each docking station to significantly improve working conditions and welfare.
Transportation between sea and land will also become more seamless.
By connecting public ferry routes and national subsidized routes, travel times will be reduced by over an hour, and connections to land transportation such as public buses and taxis will be strengthened.
The inconvenience of waiting for buses or taxis after disembarking will gradually decrease.
Through this direct operation of national subsidized sea routes, Shinan County aims to prioritize resident safety and systematically resolve accumulated inconveniences and distrust.
The essential sea routes for island residents will now be managed as a public transportation service, becoming safer and more reliable.
We appreciate your interest and support for the upcoming changes in Shinan's maritime transportation.
