About Seobyeokjeong
Seobyeokjeong was built in 1886 by Song Byeong-seon, a descendant of Song Si-yeol, near the Gucheondong stream in Muju.
Here, scholars enjoyed nature, discussed national affairs, and taught students.
The building features a hip-and-gable roof structure with four frontal sections and three lateral sections, built on a stone foundation made of rough stones.
It is designed like a pavilion on both sides, generally following the simple style of a Joseon Dynasty scholar's residence.
Song Byeong-seon was a figure who demonstrated his resistance against Japan through suicide after the Eulsa Treaty. His loyalty and Confucian spirit are deeply embedded in this space.
The current building was rebuilt in 1891, and traces of North Korean soldiers who stayed here during the Korean War remain.
Surrounding Scenery & Viewing Tips
Seobyeokjeong is located midway between Rajetongmun Gate and Gucheondong Valley.
Ilsadae (Suseongdae), the 6th scenic spot of Gucheondong's 33 attractions, is located right in front, making it great to visit together.
Entering the valley in front of the pavilion is prohibited due to the deep water and strong currents, and access to the Ilsadae bridge is also restricted.
Be especially careful of slipping accidents during rainy weather.
The entrance is closed, but the interior dancheong (traditional Korean decorative coloring on wooden buildings) and structure can be observed from the outside due to the low wall.
It is a space where you can feel the beauty of traditional architecture harmonizing with nature up close.
In Conclusion
Seobyeokjeong is a quiet pavilion where Muju's nature and the spirit of scholars harmoniously blend.
Walking slowly along the path of Gucheondong allows you to encounter both nature and history.
We hope this trip will be a time to discover the hidden aspects of Muju.
We will greet you again at the next Muju-Jangsu travel destination.
