Recommended Restaurant for Cheongukjang in Geumsan: Hwangto Jip People

Are you looking for a delicious place to enjoy Cheongukjang (fermented soybean paste) in Geumsan? Look no further than Hwangto Jip People, a must-visit spot near Daejeon.
On weekends, I often find myself pondering what to have for lunch. Should I eat something simple at home, order delivery, or go out? This time, I decided to take a drive to Geumsan, which is a popular weekend destination from Daejeon. After a quick search, I found Hwangto Jip People.
Located in Jinshan-myeon, Geumsan-gun, Hwangto Jip People is easily accessible. After passing the Anyeong IC in Daejeon and heading towards Daeheungsan, you can find a cluster of restaurants before entering Daeheungsan Provincial Park. There are several attractions nearby, including Daeheungsan Provincial Park, Onbit Natural Recreation Forest, and Yangchon Natural Recreation Forest, making it an excellent spot for a meal and a leisurely stroll.
Hwangto Jip People is recognized as an exemplary restaurant in Geumsan County. I discovered this place through the official blog of Chungcheongnam-do, which highlights local gems.
As I entered the restaurant, I noticed a unique collection of teapot sets that contrasted with the rustic decor. The first floor was already full by a little after 11 AM on Sunday, so I was fortunate to find a table on the second floor. If you want to avoid waiting, I recommend arriving around 11 AM.
The menu offers a choice between stone pot rice or regular rice, with the Hwangto Jip Yeongyang Stone Pot Rice Set priced at 18,000 KRW per person and the Hwangto Jip Cheongukjang Set at 13,000 KRW.
The interior is predominantly made of wood, creating a warm, homely atmosphere filled with charming decorations. The side dishes served were delightful, including shrimp paste and boiled pork, evoking the feeling of a countryside meal.
Each side dish had a distinct flavor, with the mushroom seasoned with perilla seeds being particularly delicious. The seasoned bean sprouts had a slight spiciness that was enjoyable. The braised mackerel was thick and well-seasoned, complemented by a refreshing aged kimchi that I found quite appealing.
As the stone pot rice was served, I was eager to mix it with the flavorful side dishes. The rice, made with black glutinous rice, was topped with beans and ginkgo nuts. I prefer not to add water to make nurungji (crispy rice) and instead let the heat do its magic.
The Cheongukjang itself had a rustic flavor reminiscent of a grandmother's cooking, making it a perfect dish for family gatherings or for anyone who appreciates traditional Korean flavors. The combination of the chewy stone pot rice and the rich Cheongukjang made for a satisfying weekend lunch.
After the meal, I recommend visiting the adjacent café, where you can enjoy a discount on all menu items by presenting your receipt. The café showcases a variety of teapot sets, resembling a small museum.
As the weather gets colder, a drive to Geumsan for a meal and a stroll sounds like a great idea!
