Finding 'Myself' with Family: A Healing Journey in Gongju

Busy routines often leave little room to pause, reflect, and reconnect with family. Our two-day, one-night journey along the Gongju Sinabro Healing Path offered exactly that kind of breathing space.
Surrounded by the ancient pine forest of Magoksa Temple, we stepped away from screens and schedules, focusing instead on mindful walking, quiet conversations, and shared moments of calm.
This experience was more than a simple trip. It became a gentle meditation in nature, allowing each of us to rediscover ourselves while strengthening family bonds.
Starting the Healing Journey at Magoksa
At 1 PM, our family gathered at the Magoksa Tourist Information Center in Sagok-myeon, Gongju. The sense of anticipation was clear as we met the program coordinator who guided us into the experience.
A thoughtfully prepared welcome package awaited us, including mineral water, warm packs, toiletries, and local snacks. This small gesture immediately set a tone of care and hospitality.
Walking Meditation Through the Pine Forest
The core of the Gongju Sinabro Healing Path lies in walking meditation. We began with breathing exercises and sensory awareness, slowly tuning into the scent of pine, the texture of grass, and the sound of wind.
As we passed through grassy fields, the temple gate, and deep into the forest trail, conversations naturally faded. In their place came the quiet whispers of the forest, offering a deeper sense of presence.
Sacred Sites and Grounding Experiences
The route led us to meaningful landmarks such as Gunwangdae, the octagonal pavilion, and Baengnyeonam. Here, grounding and breathing meditation helped us slow down even further.
Drinking from the sacred spring at Baengnyeonam and visiting the stone Buddha prayer site added a spiritual layer to the walk, encouraging us to empty our minds and simply move forward step by step.
History, Reflection, and Family Connection
The healing path also offered educational moments, passing by historical places like Baekbeom Kim Gu’s former residence. These stops naturally sparked curiosity and conversation for the children.
Reading inspiring quotes aloud as we walked helped us imagine how this forest changes with each season, turning the trail into a shared storytelling space.
Meditation and Tea Ceremony at the Training Center
At the Korean Cultural Training Center, our time shifted inward. Writing postcards to ourselves, scheduled to arrive a month later, encouraged deep reflection on what comfort truly means.
Music meditation followed, offering relaxation through sound. While wandering thoughts sometimes surfaced, the practice itself revealed how rarely we allow our minds to rest.
In the evening, a formal tea ceremony brought another layer of calm. Watching both parents and children sit quietly with tea felt like a lesson in patience and mindfulness.
A Gentle Goodbye to the Healing Path
Free time was spent walking softly through the forest at night, listening to healing audio channels, and enjoying a clean, peaceful breakfast the next morning.
Our final tea gathering allowed us to share reflections from the past two days. Saying goodbye felt bittersweet, yet we left with lighter hearts.
The Gongju Sinabro Healing Path is not merely a walking trail. It is a forest classroom for meditation and self-discovery, offering a meaningful pause for anyone overwhelmed by daily life.
