Must-Visit Place in Goesan-gun
MunGwang Reservoir in Goesan
This autumn, the foliage season was delayed due to the late heat and prolonged autumn rain. The scenery, which usually begins in mid-October, started in late October and peaked in the second week of November. Thanks to this, the foliage season has been extended, and outings are more dispersed, allowing for a more relaxed and longer enjoyment of autumn colors. MunGwang Reservoir in Goesan, famous for its Ginkgo tree-lined road, also reached its peak in the second week of November. I'm here to share its beautiful autumn scenery.
The MunGwang Reservoir foliage path is a famous spot that I always visit in the fall. I waited anxiously from the end of October, wondering, 'Is it time yet? Or should I wait longer?' I finally visited on the second weekend of November. My anticipation grew stronger with the start of November, and the news of delayed foliage, with only 60-70% of the leaves turned, made me a little impatient.
The Ginkgo tree road at MunGwang Reservoir is visited by many people every year. Accumulated experience has reduced congestion compared to previous years. There's a large parking lot behind the reservoir, and traffic flow is managed with one-way routes.
A deck trail extends from the Salt Literature Museum, leading to MunGwang Reservoir. There's a circular path that offers a beautiful waterfront view on an approximately one-hour walk. The Ginkgo tree road at MunGwang Reservoir is known to have been created and managed by local residents. It began in 1977 when residents of Yanggok-ri donated 200 Ginkgo trees. Now, more than 45 years later, about 2km of Ginkgo tree road surrounds the reservoir.
The best way to enjoy the autumn foliage at MunGwang Reservoir is to visit early in the morning. The combination of the rising mist and the yellow foliage path creates a spectacular sight. A light mist rises above the water surface, and nearby, fishing platforms along the waterfront offer a serene morning.
The Ginkgo foliage is slightly draped over the distant mountain ridges that meet the misty reservoir surface.
Closer by, a foliage path of old trees lined up in three rows continues.
The yellow-dyed foliage is reflected on the surface of MunGwang Reservoir, doubling its beauty and creating the exquisite scenery of the MunGwang Reservoir Ginkgo tree road, which I revisit every autumn. The MunGwang Reservoir Ginkgo tree road is a harmony of mountains, water, and Ginkgo trees. With the scenic ridges of MunGwang-myeon in the background, the yellow Ginkgo tree road stands out even more among the colorful foliage. The approximately 2km Ginkgo tree road offers three different views: the foliage path lined up in three rows, the view from the reservoir looking up, and the view from the reservoir looking down. The foliage scenery changes constantly as you walk along the waterfront trail and the Ginkgo tree road.
The Ginkgo tree road is densely lined with old trees that are over 40 years old, and towards the end, smaller trees begin, creating a landscape with open space. During the second weekend of November, it was at its peak, completely dyed in yellow, while some trees had already shed all their leaves.
The Ginkgo tree road smoothly connects to the deck trail along the reservoir's terrain.
The foliage path walking course consists of a loop that passes through the deck path and the embankment path, returning to the starting point.
Including leisurely photo time, it's about a 1 hour and 30-minute autumn walk.
If you also visit the nearby local food farmers' market, you can enjoy it as a 2-hour outing.
As the morning sun adds to the deck path, you'll encounter the reservoir's unique dreamy and mysterious scenery. The tranquility of the fishing platforms and the low ridges with scattered sunlight were another autumn scene that contrasted with the clear and vibrant foliage path.
The Ginkgo tree road peaks in mid-November and then heads towards its end. The Ginkgo tree road, where you'll be captivated by its beauty and comforted by its tranquility, is highly recommended for an autumn outing you won't regret.
A local food market is also held every year. It's a direct sales market for local residents, and two events were held on October 25th and November 1st, including performances. Goesan apples, mushrooms, pumpkins, chili powder, perilla oil, and sesame oil were sold, as well as street food such as chrysanthemum bread, carp bread, chestnuts, and fish cakes. After an early morning walk, your stomach will be warmed, and your hands will be full.
