Facing Invisible Lives on a Rainy Day
Across Seosan-si and Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do
가로림만 국가해양생태공원

While many prefer the sea on sunny, photogenic days, the rainy sea offers a unique, deep sense of serenity. Garolim Bay (가로림만), recently designated as Korea's first National Marine Ecological Park, is a vast ecosystem stretching between Seosan and Taean. This gourd-bottle-shaped bay is home to diverse marine life, including the rare spotted seal, and remains one of the most well-preserved tidal flats in Korea. A visit to Ungdo (웅도) and Wangsan Port (왕산포구) on a rainy day reveals a different side of the ocean—one that speaks in a low, deep breath of ancient history and quiet resilience. It is a place where nature and human life have learned to coexist, preserved from development to protect the invisible lives beneath the water.
Ungdo: The Island of Quiet Breaths
Ungdo, named for its resemblance to a crouching bear, is the only inhabited island among the seven islands in the Daesan-eup area. In the past, the path to the island was only revealed during low tide, but a new bridge now allows for easier access while protecting the ecological flow of the tidal flats.
Walking along the coastal deck on a rainy day, the gray sky and sea merge into a single, seamless horizon. The rhythmic sound of raindrops hitting the water creates a moment of profound solitude. Despite the vibrant life existing within the mudflats, the atmosphere at Ungdo remains low and deep, inviting visitors to reflect on the importance of preservation.

Wangsan Port: Where Life Meets the Sea
A short drive from Ungdo leads to Wangsan Port, where the presence of daily life is much more felt. This port is the setting of the famous 1969 song "Seosan Mudflat Village," which captures the emotions of coastal life. Even on a rainy day, the port is alive with wandering cats seeking shelter under cafe awnings and birds floating patiently above the water.Spotted Seals and the Spirit of Conservation
Near the seaside at Wangsan Port, a seal-shaped sculpture marks this bay as a habitat for spotted seals. While they are rare to spot, their presence is a testament to the healthy ecology of Garolim Bay. This area was once considered for tidal power development, but through the efforts of residents and experts, it was preserved as a protected marine area.Location & Map Information
