Exploring Yongbongsan: A Spring Hiking Adventure

▲ Yongbongsan Peak Stone
Yongbongsan, located in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, is a low mountain with an altitude of about 381 meters. Despite its modest height, the mountain is renowned for its stunning rock formations, unique ridges, and picturesque pine trees, earning it the nickname 'Kumgangsan of Chungnam.'
This hiking destination is beloved by both beginners and experienced hikers, as it offers a variety of scenic views in a relatively short time. The unique beauty created by the rocks and pines, along with the changing natural landscapes throughout the seasons, is particularly captivating.
Today, I will share my experience of a spring hike to Yongbongsan.
▲ Yongbongsan Natural Recreation Forest Parking Area Photo Zone
Before entering the main hiking trail, the view of Yongbongsan from the expansive lawn at the natural recreation forest is impressive. This spot is a popular photo zone for hikers, although many are unaware of it. It’s an excellent place to capture memorable photos with the mountain ridge as a backdrop, making it perfect for warming up and snapping pictures before the hike.
▲ Yongbongsan Hiking Trail
At the entrance of the hiking trail, there is a well-placed sign guiding hikers on the Yongbongsan course. The hike starts from the natural recreation forest, passing by the Choi Young General's Archery Range, the peak, Nojeokbong, Akguibong, and Byeongpung Rock, before returning to the starting point. Although the distance is relatively short, the variety of sights along the way enhances the overall experience.
▲ Scenic Views of Yongbongsan
Even though Yongbongsan is a low mountain, the combination of rocky formations and pine trees creates a breathtaking landscape, particularly vibrant in spring when the entire mountain is cloaked in green. The pines growing between the rocks contribute to the unique mountain scenery.
▲ Choi Young General's Archery Range
After about 15-20 minutes of hiking, you will reach the Choi Young General's Archery Range. This site is legendary for being where the renowned general practiced archery during the late Goryeo period. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and fields, making it a highly satisfying segment of the hike.
▲ Yongbongsan Peak Stone
It takes about 30-40 minutes to reach the peak from the archery range. The peak stone is situated at a height that requires climbing for a photo opportunity. On a clear day, visitors can enjoy stunning views along with memorable photos.
▲ Nojeokbong
Continuing along the ridge from the peak, you will encounter Nojeokbong. In this area, you can see the symbolic pines of Yongbongsan, particularly one that grows sideways between the rocks, showcasing nature's vitality and evoking admiration. The mountain is adorned with uniquely shaped pines that capture attention throughout the hike.
▲ Seals Rock
During the hike, you will also come across Seals Rock, which resembles a seal, adding to the fun of the trek. Yongbongsan is not just a mountain to walk; it offers the excitement of discovering unique rock formations.
▲ Byeongpung Rock
After passing Akguibong, you will see Dog Rock. At first glance, its shape may not be obvious, but from certain angles, it resembles a dog with perked ears. I also passed this rock without recognizing it during my first hike, but upon closer examination of the scenery, everything appeared new and fascinating.
▲ Yong Rock
As you head toward Byeongpung Rock, a massive boulder comes into view. This is Yong Rock, which impresses with its grand and powerful appearance. Even without a sign indicating its name, the rock's majesty is evident, making you think, 'Wow, this rock looks significant!' It truly is a stunning sight.
▲ Byeongpung Rock
Upon reaching Byeongpung Rock, you will find a spacious and flat rocky area, perfect for resting and enjoying the surrounding scenery. It serves as an ideal break point during the hike.
▲ Azaleas Blooming on Yongbongsan
As you begin your descent, the essence of spring becomes even more palpable. Azaleas start blooming throughout Yongbongsan, enhancing the spring hiking atmosphere alongside the pines. This segment allows you to fully experience the seasonal changes.
Overall, this hike, taken at a leisurely pace with plenty of photo stops, took about 3 hours and 40 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 4.9 kilometers. The trail is relatively easy but offers breathtaking views and diverse rock formations, making it a delightful hiking course. If you're planning a light yet fulfilling spring hike, I highly recommend Yongbongsan.
