Exploring the Underground Shopping Center at Cheonan Station

Opened in 1988, the underground shopping center at Cheonan Station boasts a rich history of 37 years.
Have you ever visited an underground shopping mall? I have always loved the unique atmosphere of these spaces, and it feels even more special to see them adapt and try new things despite the changing times.
The underground shopping center at Cheonan Station, located in Daeheung-dong, Cheonan, has a fascinating history. Once thriving with 285 stores, it faced challenges due to the decline of the old city center. However, since its designation as a cultural industry promotion zone in 2008 and a traditional commercial preservation area in 2011, it has been seeking new transformations.
As I entered through the entrance leading from the East Square of Cheonan Station, I noticed a clean sign that reads 'Cheonan Station Underground Shopping Center & Food Court,' giving it a fresh feel. Colorful food illustrations flanked the entrance, creating a lively atmosphere. Notably, there was a sign welcoming customers to use the Onnuri gift certificates and offering free parking for shoppers, which is a fantastic policy in the old city center where free parking is scarce.
Surrounding the entrance, there are various cozy snack shops. One restaurant, with a sign reading 'Korean Food & Snacks,' had a Christmas tree and small potted plants in front, creating a warm ambiance. It seems to serve a variety of snack and Korean food menus, providing a convenient dining space for shoppers.
Upon entering the underground mall, I was greeted by vibrant trick art on the floor! The 3D artwork depicted a giant shark seemingly leaping out of a split ocean, rendered in high quality without any damage, making it a great spot for photos and adding fun to the shopping experience.
I came across an arcade! Having fond memories of visiting arcades as a child, it was surprising to see many students enjoying games there. Under purple lights, various arcade machines lined up, showcasing the enduring appeal of arcades to younger generations.
In the center of the underground mall, there is a breastfeeding room, a thoughtful addition that enhances accessibility. A pink heart-shaped sign reading 'ROOM FOR A BABY' indicated that it was well-maintained, reflecting the shopping center's efforts to adapt to modern needs.
The underground mall also features numerous craft workshops, selling traditional woodworking, paintings, and decorative items. These spaces have the potential to become hubs for young artists, contributing to the creative culture in Cheonan.
Today, I strolled through the underground shopping center at Cheonan Station, which has stood the test of time for 37 years. The continuous efforts to evolve and adapt to changing circumstances were truly impressive. With a mix of clothing, shoes, snacks, and beautiful flower shops, it offers a diverse shopping experience. The convenient connection to Cheonan Station and the free parking benefit make it an ideal place for shopping and cultural enjoyment.
