Exploring the Tranquility of Chaeunam in Goesan

Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do, evokes images of clear valleys and deep mountains at the mere mention of its name.
Among them, if you visit Chaeunam, hidden in the high mountains of Gugok, you will naturally fall in love with its beauty.
Chaeunam quietly sits beside rugged cliffs, and its winding valleys and dense forests allow you to truly appreciate the majesty of nature.
Crossing the bridge and walking a bit further, you will find the entrance to Chaeunam, which leads up a steep slope.
If you prefer a gentler path, you can move to the right, but it will double the distance.
It is recommended to take the steep route up and the gentler route down.
Chaeunam was originally founded in 1277 by the monk Doil Seonsa, who established Su-doam in the valley inside Cheongseongdae, across from Hwayangcheon.
Later, in 1619, during the reign of King Gwanghaegun, the monk Hyesik rebuilt it and named it Chaeunam.
With a history spanning over hundreds of years, the name Chaeunam is anything but ordinary.
“Chaeun” means 'colorful clouds,' and imagining the clouds descending from the high mountains makes it clear why it was named so.
The current location was established in 1655 by the monk Hyeil, who built Hwanjangsa temple.
In 1896, during the uprising against Japanese authorities, the temple was set on fire, leaving only three halls remaining.
After being destroyed by a major flood in 1948, parts of Chaeunam were relocated to its current site in 1949, and it was then referred to as Chaeunam.
Despite its troubled history, it still stands strong today.
Upon entering the temple grounds, the first thing you feel is tranquility.
The sounds of birds and other visitors are absent here.
Only the sounds of the wind and birds fill the air, creating a lasting memory with the small stone in front of the hall and the wind chime hanging from the eaves.
The wooden statue of the seated Buddha in Chaeunam was designated as a cultural heritage of Chungcheongbuk-do in 1998.
It is surprising to find such a precious cultural asset housed in this quiet hermitage.
After paying respects to the Buddha, stepping outside to overlook the surroundings is breathtaking.
The view is truly picturesque, with visitors in the valley below appearing as tiny ants and the green slopes across shining brightly.
Chaeunam is not a famous tourist spot with photo zones or cafes; it is simply an old hermitage quietly sitting high above.
However, I chose to visit Goesan for such scenery, and I have no regrets.
The path to Chaeunam was not easy, but the silence and scenery at the summit reward the effort abundantly.
If you wish to find true tranquility in nature, I highly recommend Chaeunam.
