Exploring the Tranquil Beauty of Gaksyeonsa Temple in Winter

[ Gaksan Temple Trip ]
Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
Gaksyeonsa Temple, nestled in the serene winter hills of Chilkbo Mountain, captivates visitors with its charm.
Winter at the temple, blanketed in white snow, enhances its tranquility. As the trees slumber, the surroundings grow quieter. The vibrant colors of the temple's traditional decorations stand out against the monochrome landscape, and the only sound is that of crunching snow underfoot. This peaceful atmosphere allows one to enjoy meditation and momentarily escape worldly worries. Such was the journey to Gaksyeonsa Temple on the last Sunday of January.
Gaksyeonsa Temple is located at the foot of Chilkbo Mountain, 770 meters above sea level. The path leading to it, winding through forest trails between ridges, brings happiness even before reaching the temple. The beautiful mountains of Goesan embrace this journey, allowing one to momentarily leave behind daily life and lean into nature.
Standing in the temple courtyard, the surrounding ridges create a cozy atmosphere, making it feel as if one has climbed the mountain despite not having done so. Gaksyeonsa Temple is proud of its beautiful mountain scenery and three cultural heritage sites, including the treasure stone statue of Virochana Buddha, the main hall (Daeungjeon), and the Virojeon, both classified as cultural heritage of North Chungcheong Province.
As one ascends the gentle forest path, a valley appears, leading directly to the temple buildings. However, the ascent continues as it connects to the Chilkbo Mountain hiking trail. A few years ago, early spring brought the sight of adonis flowers blooming in the valley.
The snow-covered temple in the early morning is beautiful, framed by the autumn leaves and green bamboo grass.
Gaksyeonsa Temple is believed to have been founded by the monk Yuil during the reign of King Beopheung of Silla and later restored by the monk Tongil during the early Goryeo period, becoming a large temple. It has undergone several renovations during the Joseon Dynasty, but compared to its fame as a millennium-old temple representing North Chungcheong, its size is modest. Perhaps the expansive surrounding ridges contribute to its humble feel.
To the left of Daeungjeon is the Samsunggak, and at the end of the right hill lies the Virojeon, which houses treasures. Surrounding them are the bell pavilion, dormitory, and a two-story pavilion. In one corner of the courtyard, stone bowls and lanterns covered in snow add to the charm of the temple's history.
Gaksyeonsa Temple is reached via a gentle path at the foot of Chilkbo Mountain. The scenery feels as if one has ascended to the 8/10 mark of the mountain. It is a breathtaking view that makes you feel as if you have arrived deep in the mountains. The winter forest, covered in snow, reveals the unique charm of Gaksyeonsa Temple. The fresh snow from the previous night blankets the area in pure white, only leaving paths connecting the temple buildings open.
The path to Gaksyeonsa Temple is a gentle slope leading from the main road through village paths, with a comfortable incline from the parking area to the courtyard. The stone walls are high, supporting the temple's facilities, including the dormitory and office, leading up to Daeungjeon and Virojeon. Despite its location in the deep mountains, it is always accessible. Daeungjeon, situated at the top, is a simple representation of a temple with a three-bay front and two-bay side, topped with a gabled roof.
Around the two-story pavilion, an ancient magnolia tree is showing its flower buds, hinting at the arrival of spring.
At the innermost part is the Virojeon, housing the stone statue of Virochana Buddha, with a gabled roof featuring three bays at the front and three at the side, classified as a cultural heritage of North Chungcheong Province. After waiting for the monk's prayers to conclude, one finally faces this treasure. The elegant oval face of the statue, adorned with intricate patterns and flames, reveals a serene smile.
Gaksyeonsa Temple, accompanied by its treasures and cultural heritage, is beautifully set against the backdrop of Chilkbo Mountain. The lush forests and valleys of Goesan create a natural wonder. In winter, the snowy scenery and tranquil landscape are delightful, while early spring brings wildflowers, summer offers lush greenery, and autumn showcases colorful leaves. It becomes a journey to find oneself within nature.
